  1. Aim: How does one draw and interpret “Lewis electron dot diagrams?” Vocabulary: Valence electrons- the number of electrons in the last principal energy level. Eight is stable; called “stable octet.” (H and He are only exceptions.) ex: 2-8-2 Lewis electron dot diagram- shows valence electrons as dots around element symbol. ION- a charged atom; due to loss or gain of electrons.

Aim: How does one draw and interpret “Lewis electron dot diagrams?” Review for test: I will know how to: • Refer to Table O; note that a proton is a Hydrogen nucleus (point to it) • Interpret isotopic notation; ex: 12C 32Si? • Define isotope: Element with same atomic number but different number of neutrons. • Calculate average atomic mass; lab this week. • Interpret electron configurations in the ground state and excited state. • Distinguish between ions and atoms: ex: K+ vs. K
