  1. Status of the Japan Participation and progress in Hiroshima Toru Sugitate and Kenta Shigaki for the Hiroshima ALICE/PHOS Group on 21 January, 2005 at CERN

  2. Activities in Hiroshima CSP ver.3 and its 1st mass-production continuing studies of PWO/APD/CSP expertizing the PWO carolimeter Official Business Associated member in ALICE PHOS at RHIC Grant proposal in Japan presentation outline Toru Sugitate / Hiroshima / ALICE004 / 21 January, 2005

  3. discussed in July ‘04, based on the successful PS and SPS tests in ‘03; no circuit change from ver.2 decouple the test input from signal lines make space around APD soldering holes sample evaluation in Sept/Oct at CERN thanks to Iouri production of ver.3 starts on 25 Oct. in Japan delivered to Hiroshima in late Dec. 4,500 CSP’s now at CERN CSP milestones for the 1st PHOS module Toru Sugitate / Hiroshima / ALICE004 / 21 January, 2005

  4. 1.Static properties of PWO’s by; Furukawa, Japan (2000~) RI&NC in Minsk, Belarus (2003~) North Crystal in Apatity, Russia on; photon yield and decay time as a function of temp, and 2. APD gain as a function of; temp. and HV 9.4 pe @10℃ 11.1ns @10℃ 12.5 pe @0℃ 13.5ns @0℃ 15.6 pe @-10℃ 17.0ns @-10℃ 20.6 pe @-20℃ 22.2ns @-20℃ 23.0ns @-25℃ 24.2 pe @-25℃ pulse height[ch] time [ns] continuing studies of PWO/APD/CSP N.C. PWO w/pmt for 60Co-γ’s photon yield decay time yield/ch Toru Sugitate / Hiroshima / ALICE004 / 21 January, 2005

  5. Recent PWO/APD/CSP tests in Japan Tohoku-LNS (2002); photons at 0.8–1.2 GeV Hiroshima-REFER (2003/04); electrons at 150 MeV KEK-PS (2004); hadrons/electrons at 0.5–2 GeV Hiroshima-REFER(2004/Dec); electron at 150 MeV expertizing the PWO calorimeter • 3x3 array of North Crystal PWO’s • w/APD+ CSP(v2)+amp+PHADC • in a metal shielded wooden box • w/ double - Peltier modules and • thermal insulation layer inside. Toru Sugitate / Hiroshima / ALICE004 / 21 January, 2005

  6. sE / E (@400V in 0ºC) = (4.6±0.9)%/E [GeV]  (3.1±0.1)%/E [GeV]  (2.8±0.04)% high-lights from the beam tests in 2004 left and below; all events; electron events:require electrons at the center. Pulse height spectra of a 3x3 North Crystal PWO array w/ APD +CSP(v2) readout chain, operated at bias=405V under a condition at -11 ºC; irradiated by 150MeV electrons at the center crystal in Dec 2004 at Hiroshima-REFER Energy sum spectra for 1.0 GeV beams sE / E = 5.3% Pulse height spectra of a 3x3 Norh Crystal PWO array w/ APD + CSP(v2) readout chain, operated at bias = 400V under a condition at 0ºC; irradiated by 1.0 GeV secondary-beams at KEK-PS in June 2004. • We should improve S/N ratio, • look the stat. term good, and • should find a better beam line. Toru Sugitate / Hiroshima / ALICE004 / 21 January, 2005

  7. official business • Hiroshima, Tokyo-CNS and Tsukuba are now ALICE associated members, together with RIKEN. • Hiroshima: 3 faculty staffs and grad. students • Various discussion made about PHOS@RHIC; • Flemming at BNL in Dec. • Hideki et.al. at Tokyo in Dec. • Grant-in-Aid proposal (\1.75b~13M EUR for 6 years) submitted; incl. • PHOS/APD&FEE by Hiroshima • TRD/detector by Tsukuba • TRD/readout by Tokyo-CNS • non-ALICE parts by theory and lattice groups • My R&D grant will end in a year, but still may cover; • another prototyping/testing work at Hiroshima, • production of T- card for PHOS@RHIC, • PHOS activities at RHIC, and • travels to CERN/BNL/China? Toru Sugitate / Hiroshima / ALICE004 / 21 January, 2005

  8. 4,500 CSP’s are now at CERN for the 1st PHOS module Japanese 3 institutes’ official participation in ALICE, together with RIKEN Grant proposal submitted for PHOS/TRD in Japan Plan/discussion of the PHOS@RHIC project underway Ready to kick-off the Physics and Tech. WG’s We are looking forward to working for PHOS@RHIC RSN summary and outlook Toru Sugitate / Hiroshima / ALICE004 / 21 January, 2005
