  1. Freudian Theory: The Unconscious

  2. Before We Begin…..LET’S REVIEW!!!!!

  3. Now for the New Stuff • httpwww.youtube.com/watch?v=hoM8bHQtSEU

  4. The Unconscious • The Id • The Ego • The Superego

  5. The Iddy thing called the Id • Contains a reservoir of unconscious psychic energy that, according to Freud, strives to satisfy basic sexual and aggressive drives. • Operates on the pleasure principle, demanding immediate gratification. • Think of a newborn baby…. • Think of a smoker or alcoholic…

  6. The Ego, not to be confused with The Fonz. • The largely conscious, “executive” part of personality that, according to Freud, mediates among the demands of the id, superego, and reality. • Operates on the reality principle, satisfying the id’s desires in ways that will realistically bring pleasure rather than pain. • When this develops young children learn to cope with the real world. • To give you an idea…. Think of something you would like to tell someone that made you mad.

  7. It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! NO? It’s SUPEREGO!!!! • The part of the personality that, according to Freud, represents internalized ideals and provide standards for judgment (the conscious) and for future aspirations. • Think again of the thing you wanted to tell someone • Now, think of the reason why you’re not going to say it.

  8. LET’S WRAP THIS UP…
