  4. Destination- Work or Military • Work- secure work site toward the end of the school year. • Job shadow, Internship 2nd semester still possible • Contact Career Specialists • Military- speak with recruiters when available during lunch • Military- take the ASVAB, Late October

Majors • Optional! • Do not have to earn a major to graduate • High school major does NOT have to match your intended college major • Applications due May 1st, will be discussed, completed with students in their meetings • IGP is the planning document- 12th grade classes may have changed. Counselors check class history to determine if major is earned. • Recognized at Graduation!

  6. Destination- Two-Year College • Transfer Programs vs. Career Programs (MTC #1 Grad. destination) • Take entrance exam required by the school. (MTC requires ASSET or COMPASS placement test taken at MTC) • IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO PURSUE A HEALTH CAREER AT MTC, YOU NEED TO TAKE THE SAT OR ACT.

ACT • One composite score: 1-36 • Most colleges require WRITING section CLEMSON REQUIRES! • Register on-line at: www.actstudent.org/start • Score reports can be sent to 4 colleges without charge- take advantage of this! • Great Web Site! Test prep, college planning, career planning, amend registration

  10. Which College is right for me? • Research Possible Colleges • Internet Searches • College Guide • College Visits • SENIORS get 2 days Excused for Official College Visits. Simply get something signed and dated from College and submit to attendance office. NO PRE-APPROVAL NEEDED. • Better call University/College to set-up parking, best times, etc…

  11. COLLEGE BUS TOURS • This year bus stops at: • Clemson Univ. and Lander- TBD • Converse College (Girls only)- Oct. 2 • Excused absence- see Mrs. Earle in guidance to sign-up Bus leaves around 8:00 returns around 5:00. Cost approx. $20-$30

Applying to College- AT&T • A: Complete an Application • On-Line applications are preferred by colleges • Recommended to apply to three colleges • Don’t let cost keep you from applying • T: Request your Transcript be sent- PARCHMENT • T: Request Test Scores be sent directly by SAT/ACT to schools applied

  13. REQUESTING TRANSCRIPTS PARCHMENT • Second year! (First year very successful) • Free for all SC universities/colleges • Simple, just register and submit requests

Guidance Forms-cont.SCHOLARSHIP TRANSCRIPTS • Scholarship transcript request (yellow) • Only needed if scholarship dictates needing an Official transcript then student needs to request and submit yellow form. • FREE transcripts for scholarships • If student “wins/earns” any scholarship please give us a copy of award letter- even if you don’t plan to use it!

  16. Guidance Forms-cont. • Recommendation- student information request form • Helpful to person writing letter if requesting a recommendation/reference letter • Assists person by indicating student accomplishments and interests • Not all applications/scholarships need letters of recommendation

  17. Deadlines!!! • Watch for deadlines- each school/scholarship sets their own • Allow 7 working days for LHS to process paper applications/requests • Parchment request 3 days or less • Set a personal deadline of Thanksgiving Break “If you can smell the Turkey it’s getting late!”

Don’t panic- check status If you wait until near the BIGGER colleges deadlines to complete the application and make transcript requests, they may mail automatic mailing/emails stating they still need…. For example, last year MTC and Clemson… Check Parchment account to see if we sent it, then CALL college to see if they have it but just not entered yet in their system, “lag time”.

College Athletes • If you are planning to participate in college level athletics, you MUST register with the NCAA clearinghouse. • Registration is on-line at: • www.ncaaeligibilitycenter.com • Register NOW. Registration requires submitting your transcript. (PARCHMENT) • You ALSO need to request your final transcript to be sent to the Clearinghouse- so that you will be cleared to play.   22. State Supported “Lottery” Scholarships • Palmetto Fellows • Score 1200 (Reading + Math) on SAT or 27 on ACT, 3.5 minimum GPA, top 6% of sophomore, junior or senior year. OR Score 1400 On SAT or 32 ACT $6,700 each academic year

  23. State Supported Scholarships • LIFE Scholarship (2 types) Four-Year school- two out of three qualifiers 1.) 3.0 2.) top 30% of graduating class 3.) 1100 on SAT or 24 on ACT $5,000 per academic year

Life Scholarship cont. • Two year Colleges (MTC / Spartanburg Methodist College) • 3.0- Covers most of tuition “free” *Eligibility Notes: Apply early and take COMPASS placement exam to see if you qualify for college level courses. If not, try to retest or task about “Fast Track” classes in summer!! Students must also nothave any drinking/alcohol related charges

  25. State Supported Scholarships • HOPE Scholarship • Only available at Four-Year schools • 3.0 Final GPA $2,800 for the first academic year • Lottery Tuition Assistance Program • Only available at Two-Year schools • Must complete a FAFSA Award money varies by academic year.

  28. Scholarship Scams- red flags • Fees! Scholarships should almost always be FREE to apply. • Credit card or bank account information needed- Red flag! • Scholarship $$$ guaranteed • No contact information • Unsolicited scholarships • Pressure tactics • Claims of "exclusive" scholarships • Sponsor goes out of their way to sound "official"

  29. Students will begin meeting tomorrow in large groups in the little theater! They will get a SENIOR FOLDER. Full of information/details covered tonight Recommended to keep folder somewhere safe to help stay organized. Place college letters, financial aid, housing, etc…in folders Students will also receive their UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS with updated GPA/RANKS during their meeting in the Little Theater
