    3. By the end of this session, participants will: - Be able to recognise the standards that that curricula must meet Be able to describe the structure of the psychiatry specialty curricula Contribute to discussions regarding the governance of the Core Psychiatry Curriculum

    5. The Curriculum Pre-PMETB First version Used GMP framework Mainly ST 1-3 Approved by PMETB 2007 CanMEDS version Work started July 2007 Consultation with FECC’s Extended to ST4-6 Focused on outcomes Approved by PMETB 2009 PMETB Curriculum review December 2009

According to PMETB a Curriculum is: - “A statement of the intended aims and objectives, content, experiences, outcomes and processes of a programme including a description of the structure and expected methods of learning, teaching and feedback. The curriculum should set out what knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours the trainee will achieve.”

Standards for curricula The purpose of the Curriculum must be stated Links to previous and subsequent stages of training Appropriateness to the stage of learning and to the specialty must be described The curriculum must set out the general, professional and specialty-specific content to be mastered GMP must be addressed Assessments must systematically sample

    11. Standards continued… How the curriculum will be managed locally Who is responsible for what – TPD’s, trainers, trainees The model of learning Describe methods of learning Appropriate choice of assessment methods

Standards… Supervision of the trainee Mechanisms for the supervision of the trainee should be set out Assessors/examiners will be recruited against criteria for performing the tasks they undertake Assessments must provide relevant feedback to the trainees The methods used to set standards for classification of trainees’ performance/competence must be transparent and in the public domain Documentation will record the results and consequences of trainees’ assessments through the assessment system

Standards… Curriculum review and updating Plans for the curriculum review must be set out Resources and infrastructure will be available to support trainee learning and assessment at all levels There will be lay and patient input to the development and implementation of assessments The curriculum should state its compliance with equal opportunities and anti-discriminatory practice

    15. The Curricula There are nine One per CCT There is a lot of duplication They all include CPT They share a common structure

    19. 2) Responsibilities Derived from OP69 Schools of Psychiatry TPD’s Educational supervisors/tutors Clinical supervisors/trainers Assessors Trainees Standards 5, 9 and 10Standards 5, 9 and 10

    20. 3) The Intended Learning Outcomes For Core Psychiatric Training (CT 1-3) For Advanced Training in specialty Suggested assessment methods Good Medical Practice domains There are 18 All are used in CPT Not all are used in advanced training All have knowledge, skills and attitudes demonstrated through behaviours Standards 3 and 4Standards 3 and 4

    21. Look at the Core Module This is the Curriculum for the first three years of Specialty Training in Psychiatry It has 18 Intended Learning Outcomes, grouped around the seven domains of CanMEDS

    23. 4) Methods of learning and teaching Adapted from OP69 Includes: Clinical placements Psychotherapy Formal learning (inc study leave) ECT Teaching, management, research (Special interest) Standards 6 and 7Standards 6 and 7

    24. 5) The Assessment System OP69, Exam Regulations Exams WPBA’s Standards 8, 11, 12 and 13Standards 8, 11, 12 and 13

    25. 6) Guide for ARCP panels Written by FECC’s Guides trainees as to what should be assessed, how and at which stages

    28. Delivering Are CPT programmes fit for purpose?

    29. Question for small groups (1) What has been your experience of delivering CPT; where are the hotspots? Local management of the curriculum (including access to learning opportunities) Supervision of trainees (including their assessment)

    30. Updating Is the CPT fit for purpose? How should we maintain it? What are the best ways of monitoring the CPT’s effectiveness?
