  1. Ecosystem Adaptations

  2. Why Are There No Tigers In My Back Yard? There are many different kinds of plants and animals on the Earth, but only certain kinds are naturally found at any particular place. The reason there are no tigers in your back yard is because animals such as tigers are not adapted to live in the ecosystem conditions found there.

  3. Some climates are hot, some are cold, some are wet and some are dry. If an animal has "Adapted“ to the ecosystem, it means that a plant or animal has inherited certain characteristics that enable it to live in one type of climate or another. For example, polar bears have a layer of fat under their skin and a heavy fur coat to help them withstand the arctic cold. They would have a difficult time trying to survive in a hot climate.

  4. If you think about it for a moment, you will realize that all of the plants and animals in a particular ecosystem must have certain adaptations to the climate so that they can all live in the same location. In this assignment you will research the characteristics of 6 biomes (tundra, taiga, deciduous forest, savannah grassland, rain forest and a desert) and determine the adaptations that plants and animal have that give them an advantage in that ecosystem.

  5. In this assignment you will begin by researching the characteristics of your animal & biome (tundra, taiga, deciduous forest, savannah, rain forest and a desert) and determine the adaptations required to have an advantage in that ecosystem. The links below will give you access to 2 of the sites that you MUST use for your research: + a minimum of 2 other sites (NO wikipedia) Earth Floor Biomes http://www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/msese/earthsysflr/biomes.html Blue Planet Biomes http://www.blueplanetbiomes.org/world_biomes.htm

  6. Your Group Presentation: Once you have completed your research, you will make a brochure, booklet, presentation designed to inform others about yourselves and where you live (your animal and biome)…persuade others to want to visit…or NOT to!!! You will each design your own part of the presentation, but put it together With everyone in the groups to form the final product.

  7. Using the handout as a guide to your research – include all information from numbers 1-8. BE CREATIVE IN HOW YOU PRESENT THE INFORMATION TO THE CLASS!!!

  8. What to include in your presentation: • Compile all of your research: • About your biome: • Climate • Topography • What part(s) of the world is your biome located • Plants & available resources • About your animals: • What animals are located there • How do your animals interact • What adaptations are necessary to survive Use the 10 vocabulary terms as you describe your biome/animals/plants & their ADAPTATIONS
