  1. Lecture 16 Turbines, Compressors, Pumps

  2. The Laws of the Universe Conservation of Mass – The Continuity Equation Conservation of Energy – The First Law of Thermodynamics

  3. Thermodynamic Problem Solving 1. Sketch System & Boundary2. Identify Unknowns (put them on sketch)3. Classify the System (open, closed, isolated)4. Identify Processes/States5. Write Governing Equations (including auxiliary eqns)6. Algebraically Solve7. Calculate Values (carrying units w/numbers)8. Check Results (eqns, algebra, calculations, signs, units) 9. Reflect (on the problem, on the solution, and/or on the problem solving process)

  4. Turbine

  5. Compressor Air enters a compressor at 100 kPa, 280 K and is compressed to 600 kPa, 400 K in a steady state process. The volumetric flow of the air entering the compressor is 34 cfm (ft3/min). The compressor is experiencing a heat loss of 16 kJ/kg. Assuming that the changes in kinetic and potential energies are negligible, determine the power required to run the compressor.

  6. Pump
