What is my role as your advisor • Assisting students in understanding their strengths, interests, and values • Assisting students in developing an educational plan consistent with their life goals and objectives • Assisting students in developing their decision making skills • Providing and explaining general educational requirements • Monitoring and discussing issues of concern regarding student’s academic progress

Advisor role • Recommending opportunities for personal growth and academic development • Referring students to specific campus or community resources that can help with unique needs such as career information, study skills, time management, or financial resources • Providing accurate information about institutional policies, regulations, procedures and resources • Providing student with information about educational and career paths related to their major

Your role as a student • To complete and review an educational plan • To monitor your progress towards their degree • To come prepared with questions regarding curriculum, course selections, career options, etc. to discuss with their advisor • To know your advisor’s office hours, and meet with them once a semester • To understand that the advisor’s role is to give information, and options for them to make an informed choice- not to make the decision for them • To let the advisor know that they are experiencing academic difficulty

Remember to… • Manage your time- 5- 6 hours of studying per day is the average • Review your notes, read the text book • Go to professor office hours for assistance • Any questions or concerns, e-mail or come see me • Get to know a faculty member • Get involved in campus activities: clubs, intramural sports, student government, etc
