  1. Lead the Field Final Speech This assignment is required for credit in Ms. Benton’s class. Speeches begin Friday, May 23. DO NOT PRINT IT OUT WITHOUT PERMISSION. We are low on ink and you will be wasting paper. Write down important information.

  2. The Speech • Write a 3-5 minute speech about a person you know or have known that you believe lives a successful life and how this person embodies the principles of Lead the Field. • This person must have graduated from high school already. • This person must be some one you can speak to directly OR you can speak to someone about this person if this person has passed away.

  3. Requirements • A more detailed rubric will be given to you. Otherwise use this to get started. • Speech must have two direct quotes from Lead the Field lecture. Transcripts are on my website, on the assign drive, OR with Ms. Benton. • Speech must have two direct quotes from your interviewee (the person you interviewed). • Must create a 4-5 slide power point to use in conjunction with your speech. More on this later this week. • Speech must be 3-5 minutes in length. You will practice a lot until the due date. • Must have a creative title. • Must turn in an outline in a WORD DOCUMENT for a grade on Friday, May 16. You will write in complete sentences. You will shorten this up later. • You may use INDEX CARDS with KEY WORDS during your speech. NO NOTES OTHERWISE.

  4. READ and Follow the directions… • I may or may not get an official handout to you. This power point will be on my website, the assign drive, OR you can save it to Google Docs or a flash drive. • DO NOT PRINT IT OUT WITHOUT PERMISSION. We are low on ink and you will be wasting paper. Write down important information. • I will get a rubric to you by the end of the week. • I will have more details about your power point visual later this week. • The following information will help you create an outline that you will use to create notecards for your speech. • Outlines are due on Friday, May 16 for a grade! This is your chance to get feedback from me.

  5. Outline Format • Please have a proper heading and a working title. You will come up with a creative title later. • Please make sure to use correct grammar, spelling and punctuation. • Please make sure to LABEL each part of your speech according to the slide. • You will have a thesis statement, and each part should have an obvious topic sentence that acts as your claim. A good speech will make use of transition words so it is easy for the audience to follow along. • You will write out way more than you will need for this outline. Yes, you will write this in paragraphs and in complete sentences. You will do this in a WORD document. At some point you will shorten up this information to put on your note cards.

  6. Quote REMINDER • Somewhere in the speech, you must have TWO quotes from Lead the Field lecture, but can have more. • Somewhere in the speech, you must have TWO quotes from your interviewee, but can have more. • I would spread these out over the whole speech!

  7. Part 1: Introduction • Your definition of success. You could start with a cool quote, a funny story, an interesting statistic, a fun fact, etc. Whatever you start with, it should grab our attention and let us know what you will be talking about. • Towards the end of your introduction, you will introduce the name and relationship of the person you will be talking about. • You will end this introduction with your thesis as to why you believe this person is successful. Read next slide for some thesis examples. You MUST have a clear thesis. Use one of mine OR create your own (better grade for creating your own). • DO NOT GIVE A TON OF INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR PERSON IN THIS SECTION. YOU WILL DO THAT IN PART 2.

  8. Example thesis statements • Because of his success as a father and teacher, I believe Joe Smith embodies the principles of Lead the Field. • As a mother and a full-time nurse, Jane Smith embodies what it means to have a good attitude and to make the most of her opportunities, and because of this she is a successful person. • Jane Smith has over come personal struggles to become the successful person she is today and perfectly embodies the ideas of a great attitude, making the most of her opportunities, enjoying the destination and using her mind. • Write something! Use your brain! You know more than you give yourself credit for!

Part 2: Who is this person? • Make sure to use transitions and a topic sentence to make it clear what you will be talking about. • In this section, you will give us information about who this person is. • How do you know them? • Tell us an interesting story about them. • Why are they important to you. • You are simply introducing this person to us. You will speak on their success in the next part. In this section, you are simply getting us acquainted with this person. Again, keep it interesting. Entertain us.

  10. Part 3: A Successful Life • Make sure to use transitions and a topic sentence to make it clear what you will be talking about. • This will be the longest part of your speech. You might want to break it up into smaller chunks. • Section A: In this section you will give specific examples of how and why this person is successful and fits your definition of success. • Section B: Specific examples of how this person embodies these principles from Lead the Field: • Magic Word---Having a good attitude • Acres of Diamonds---Making the most of opportunities • Worthy Destination---Having goals and enjoying the journey • Miracle of the Mind---Using their mind to problem solve; exercising their mind (See next slide)

  11. Part 3: Continued • This section should answer your thesis statement. Go back and revise it if you need to. • You can decide how to organize this section, but it might work best to follow my format. This section should cover the main parts from the previous slide. • SPECIFIC EXAMPLES should be varied and interesting. Don’t keep repeating yourself. If you need more information, get it! Problem solve!!!!!!! • Your job is to explain how this person leads a successful life. HOW DO THEY DO IT? • Pointing out flaws is just as interesting as pointing out the good stuff. HOW HAVE THEY LEARNED from these flaws and mistakes?

  12. Part 4: Inspiration • Make sure to use transitions and a topic sentence to make it clear what you will be talking about. • Here you are winding down your speech. Why and how does the inspire you? Why did you choose this person anyway? You are coming full circle. Maybe bring something back from the beginning of your speech. • How has this person changed or influenced your thinking. BE SPECIFIC!!!

  13. Part 5: Conclusion • Make sure to use transitions and a topic sentence to make it clear what you will be talking about. • Now that you have interviewed this person and have learned what you have from Lead the Field, what is the most valuable take-away for your life. What have you learned and how will you apply this learning? Be specific. End with something interesting and thought-provoking. • This is an extension of Part 4. You are now tying up all the loose ends and drawing some conclusions for your own life. • Again, you are coming full circle from the introduction. End strongly! Leave us with something to think about.
