  1. Viagra for Women

  2. Occasionally useful, particularly in women who have arousal problems due to specific medical conditions such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis or have problems due to taking SSRI anti-depressants such Citalapram, Sertraline etc. Testosterone treatment for women It has been known for many years that giving testosterone to women with low sexual desire may effectively treat the condition. For many years implants were the treatment used, then in latter years a testosterone patch called Intrinsa. However, unfortunately this patch is no longer available. Implants are not used by The Clinic as they have an unacceptable risk of side effects.

  3. So What is available? Most sexual medicine specialists including The Leger Clinic now prescribe Testosterone skin gels. Unfortunately, there is no product available on licence in the UK for use in women, however, what we use are skin gels designed for men for example Tostran but obviously a much smaller dose is prescribed for women than would be used for a man. This can be purchased from the Clinic. An alternative preparation is Androfemme, an Australian product which is designed to be used in women but is more expensive than Tostran but some women may prefer to have this prescribed by the Clinic.

  4. Testosterone gels are particularly effective in women who have had their ovaries removed thereby losing half their own natural Testosterone! Or in post-menopausal women with or without the addition of HRT where they are experiencing loss of libido. Though women may be anxious about side effects from Testosterone e.g. facial hair growth, this is an extremely rare side effect and reversible on dose reduction or ceasing taking the product. There are other medications under an advanced stage of development for low sex drive / libido in women but like Testosterone there will probably never be one “pill” that will solve all women’s sexual problems. Female sexuality is too closely connected with feelings and relationships for an “all in one” medicinal treatment.

  5. Orgasm difficulties Not being able to orgasm can be very distressing for women and their partners. However, it is important to establish whether you have ever had an orgasm either alone through masturbation or with a partner at some time. Although there are a number of physical causes that can affect orgasm such as: damage to the nervous system for example multiple sclerosis or surgery or trauma; also certain medications (especially those for treatment of depression), menopause and the condition of depression can also be a factor. Sometimes, in these situations, a good lubricant and a vibrator can be particularly helpful.

  6. However, in most cases it is due to psychological causes. Orgasm involves letting go of control and some women find this very challenging as it makes them feel vulnerable. Sometimes women find it difficult to show, or tell their partners how they like to be touched. Lots of women fake orgasm because they feel it is taking too long and then they feel they have to continue doing this, so as to not make their partner feel bad! Being aware of your own body is so important because if you don’t know what works for you, then how do you show or tell someone else! It is also important to take into account whether you feel safe and respected in the relationship and that there aren’t other distractions going on or negative memories that could be a factor.

  7. A common myth is that women should be able to orgasm with just penetrative sex; however the truth is most women need clitoral stimulation as well. Whatever the reason the clinical staff at The Leger Clinic are qualified to help with this condition; the therapists are highly skilled and have helped many women overcome this common problem.
