WEEK 9 Built to Last 00 • 00 • 2020 Unit 3 Project
Project Background Over the course of this marking period, you learned about the science of climatology and meteorology (climate and weather). As a part of your learning, you discovered the causes of severe weather events such as hurricanes and tornadoes. In this project, you will take on the role of an engineer who works for the government agency FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). Your primary job is to design buildings that can withstand a particular severe weather event or a natural hazard. These buildings will provide a safe place for the people affected to seek shelter. You will also spearhead a new and improved evacuation plan for the citizens that would be affected by the event.
Project Requirements You will be assigned one of these catastrophic events to research and develop your building and evacuation in response to: 1. Hurricane Maria 2017 (Puerto Rico) 2. Hurricane Sandy 2012 (US East Coast) 3. Mt. St. Helen’s volcanic eruption 1980 4. California Landslides (mudslides) January 1982 5. California Wild Fire Siege 2008 6. Indonesia Earthquake and Tsunami 2004 7. Record Oklahoma Tornado Outbreak 1999 8. Alabama Tornado Outbreak April 2011

2 Project Directions **YOU’RE DOING THIS EITHER ALONE OR WITH MOM AS A PARTNER** Model Partners Type name here Type name here Engineering Team Plan Partners Type name here Each team of engineers will have an assigned role within the team. There will be two partners assigned to the 3D model planning and creation and two partners will be assigned to the planning and creation of the evacuation and preparedness plan. If you have a team of less than four, two will work on the evacuation and preparedness plan and one person will work on the model. After the plan is finished, those partners will work on the model to make sure it is complete. If you have a team of more than four, three will work on the evacuation and preparedness plan and two will work on the model. Type name here
2 Project Directions Team Leader Type name here Task Leader Type name here Engineering Team Consistency Leader Each team member will be assigned a leadership role within the team. There will be one team leader for the group that will make sure both partnerships stay on time, focused and working for the entire class time. There will be a task leader that will make sure both parts of the project are staying on target to meet the task timeline set by the teacher. There will be a consistency leader to make sure the model and the plan go together in design and function. There will be a guideline leader who will make sure both projects are meeting the required elements in the project packet and on the rubrics. If you have less than four in a group, you will combine the consistency leader role with the guideline leader role. If you have more than four in a group, you will have co-leaders for the guideline leader position. Type name here Guideline Leader Type name here
Introduction Brainstorm your ideas for the improved shelter building design in the space below including the materials that will be used. Be sure to provide a description/labels that will help to understand your thinking. Building Design Plan
Introduction Record your ideas for an emergency evacuation plan in the space below. Your plan must include the following: number of shelter buildings needed to meet the needs of the population, communication system (how will you let them know it’s time to seek safety), escape routes to shelters, how will citizens know about the escape routes prior to the emergency.
