  12. Continuing the Bidding • We covered • 1 of a suit opening • Responses • General rules for continuation • This week • More detail on continuations

  13. Continuations You bid? 1 What next? PASS Partner bids 2  A  K  6  4  3 • You have 14 HCP • Partner has 6-9 HCP • Game looks unlikely  K  8  6  K  J  2  T  8

  14. Continuations You bid? 1 What next? 4 Partner bids 2  A  K  6  4  3 • You have 18 HCP • Partner has 6-9 HCP • Game looks likely  K  8  6  K  J  2  A  8

  15. Continuations You bid? 1 What next? 3 Partner bids 2  A  K  6  4  3 • You have 15 HCP • Partner has 6-9 HCP • Game looks possible  8  3  6  K  J  2  A  8

  16. Bidding 3 over 2 • When you open a major • And partner supports at the 2 level • With enough for game bid it • If close bid 3 over 2 • Asking partner to bid game with the 8 or 9 HCP, or an extra trump • But only do this with 15-16 HCP • And 5 of the major • NB 3 often fails when 2 makes

  17. Continuations You bid? 1 What next? 4 Partner bids 2  A  K  6  4  3 • You have 15 HCP • Partner has 6-9 HCP • Game looks likely • With a 6th trump • And a short suit  2  8  6  K  J  2  A  8

  18. Major Fits • The better the major fit • The higher you should bid • A 6th trump in your hand • Is a certain trick • So worth bidding 1 level higher • Than the HCP count suggests

  19. Continuation without a fit • The bidding sequence tells us whether we should stop or bid on • The bids also tell us about the shape of the hand • Lets look at some sequences and what they tell us

  34. Summary • Any suit re-bids are natural and show 4+ cards • Searching for a fit • Or showing cover in NT • Remember to show strength with 16+ HCP • Reverse; Jump Shift; New Suit at the 3 level • Try to learn the NT re-bid point counts • Practise is the ONLY way to learn bidding • Sticking to the rules gives partner confidence and develops partnership trust
