As a trade association, it has provided a knowledge base, training resource and acted as a facilitator to the entire brewing industry supply chain for the past 100 years, from seed merchants through to dispense and point of sale. Traditionally, the brewing industry has stood aside from the wider food & drink industry by dint of it having a vertical supply chain – brewers have traditionally owned the pubs and have been in control of quality and safety within their outlets. Cellar and bar equipment and services have been traditionally provided by the brewer/brand owner and a number of health & safety exemptions have been achieved, including the acceptance, by HSE of the BBPA Pressure Code of Practice, which gives the industry a number of exemptions under confined space legislation. BFBi Members have provided training to the industry on the Code of Practice as well as sector and item specific issues outwith the country’s formalised qualification programme.BFBi (Brewing, Food & Beverage Industry Suppliers Association) represents the entire range of suppliers to the brewing industry. 7. 3 Brewery Road, Wolverhampton, WV1 4JT Tel: 01902 422303 info@bfbi.org.uk www.bfbi.org.uk WHY? A need within the industry to ensure safety, quality and best practice. To improve retention rates within the industry as well as productivity, to ensure that cellar service engineers are viewed as professional technicians/engineers as opposed to “cowboys”. BFBi has, at the request of the industry, created an accreditation scheme to ensure that an accredited member has a minimum level of competency (a scheme similar to the Corgi Scheme). It is believed that this will improve retention rates within the industry as well as productivity by dint of cellar service installers being viewed as professional engineers as opposed to “cowboys”. This qualification provides a platform and springboard to the NVQ Level 3 (currently the only training qualification within the industry sector) and an introduction to a range of other qualifications, which will be specifically tailored to the dispense sector. The route of training was discussed and it was agreed that BII would provide the best “buy in” from the pub operators and best format for theoretical training. 17th February 2005 - An informal meeting of representatives from Training/Dispense Committee met to discuss the need for a qualification to promote best practice within cellar service installation and maintenance. Multiple choice examination to be taken at the end of the training day Certain questions within the examinations require a correct answer in order to pass the unit – i.e. Gas Dispense Unit Training will be provided at BIIAB accredited training centres and delivered by BIIAB accredited trainers. The examination at the end of the day is invigilated by BIIAB accredited invigilators. Before each day of formalized training, an amount of on-site training and “sitting with nelly” as well as theoretical “homework” would be needed to enable the candidate to take full benefit of the day. At the end of the day’s training a multiple choice questionnaire is given with an 80% pass rate being required, with a percentage of the questions requiring 100% pass rate, dependent upon the unit and issues being taught.
