  2. Innovation and Ageing • Use the inventiveness and the development power of regional SMEs to create new solutions for the ageing population • Create new coalitions/clusters between industry and care/welfare organisations

  3. Strategy • Problem to be solved: enormous increase in demand for health-care • Focus on new solutions for effective health-care... AND focus shift from cure (hospital) to care (home) and from care to prevention (welfare)

  4. IAB Programme • Runtime 2 years (2007-2008) • 21 projects over a wide range of topics (not only tele solutions and ICT!) • More than 50 SMEs and more than 30 care institutions were involved • € 1,6 million ERDF funding – multiplied to total investment of € 4,6 million

  5. November 2008: • AER Award for most innovative European regional programme

  6. International study visits • November 2008: Norbotten in Sweden • November 2008: Gits in West-Flanders

  8. Learning by doing • Building new coalitions takes a long time • Important to involve client base • Creating innovation on the edge of business and care/welfare needs (government) support: there’s still a lot to be done!

  9. New developments • Follow-up programme under construction: Focus on innovative coalitions of companies and care/welfare organisations around important diseases: COPD, dementia and diabetes • Interreg 4C project “Innovation 4 Welfare”

  10. Innovation 4 Welfare • 6 regions working together: Catalunya; Lombardia; North-Brabant; Southwest-Bohemia; Tartu and Upper Austria • Focus: technological innovation for health & safety issues, combining regional competencies across Europe • Examples: ageing population; increase of lifestyle diseases; increasing demand for personal care and care at home (smart homes) • Mini-programme with at least 6 subprojects; Call for Projects is now open

  12. Further IAB spin-offs • Most projects are working on sustaining and developing the IAB results • Examples: 3 projects are present today: NoviaCura; Building Smart for Elderly People; Healthy Light Solutions in Care Centres • From regional to national level: XXXXXX
