OPSEC Training & Awareness to the Army Family
OPSEC 101 OPSEC is protecting certain information that will keep your loved one safe. It’s making sure to keep the right kind of secrets to protect your loved one. What, exactly, is OPSEC? What kind of secrets? • Don’t tell anybody: • The exact area that your loved one is in (the Country is ok) • When your loved one is “on mission” • Exactly what your loved one does • When your loved one is going to leave to deploy • How long they’ll be gone
Using Social Media to Stay Connected Social media outlets such as Facebook or chat options such as Gmail chat can be a great way to stay connected during deployments. • Hints to avoid compromising OPSEC: • Don’t chat with someone unless you know them in real-life. • Avoid “friending” everyone who requests • Don’t discuss deployment details • Stay away from details such as dates, jobs, etc. • NEVER tell secrets • Be wary of anyone you meet on line, even if you met • through official military social networking sites
“Please burglarize my house!” • Web searches can reveal a lot of information, such as Facebook posts or Tweets, so... • Watch what you say online. • Set your settings as private. • Only “friend” actual friends and not just • anyone.
It’s ALWAYS better to be cautious!
