  1. Learner Differences in the classroom…Factors Impacting Learning • Learning styles • Intellectual ability • Low achievers/high achievers • Mixed ability level in all areas • Various family configurations • Differing attitudes toward school • Socioeconomic status • Culture • Race • Gender • Language • Special needs • Differing interests

  2. ESSENTIAL QUESTION: • How do human needs influence learners and learning? • Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs… • How might barriers to learning be overcome? • What can teachers do?

  3. What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? • Maslow was a psychologist who developed a theory related to human motivation. • He conceptualized human needs as a hierarchy displayed as a pyramid. • Suggests people are motivated to fulfill basic needs before moving on to other needs. • The LOWEST levels of the pyramid are made up of the most basic needs. • More complex needs are located at the TOP of the pyramid. • Each lower need must be met before moving to the next higher level. • As people progress up the pyramid, needs become increasingly psychological and social.

  4. 5. Physical needs (basic need) • These are BASIC biological & survival needs. • oxygen, food, water, shelter. • Most important needs. “Learning can only take place when basic needs have been met…” • In Education: • Basis for reduced and free lunch programs • Resources for homeless students. • Importance of having correct room temperatures. • Importance of having bathroom & drink breaks.

  5. 4. Safety & security needs (basic need) • These include needs for safety and security. • Security needs are important for survival, but they are not as demanding as the physiological needs. • Examples include: a desire for steady employment, health insurance, safe neighborhoods and shelter from the environment. IN EDUCATION: • If children do not feel safe, they cannot concentrate or learn. • Students living in an unsafe area or with a violent or abusive parent can suffer lifelong trauma that can affect them even after they are out of school. • Consistency and stability in teaching are KEY! • Controlled classroom behaviors with consistent expectations & fair discipline. • Accepting and non judgmental approach by teachers is imporant.

  6. 3. Love and belonging (growth need) • Need for love, affection and belonging. • Can come from a large social group, such as clubs, office culture, religious groups, sports teams, gangs, or small social connections (family members, intimate partners, mentors, close colleagues, confidants). • This involves both giving and receiving love, affection and the sense of belonging. IN EDUCATION: • Students may come from homes where they do not receive this need. • Teachers should be empathetic, considerate, patient & a good listener. • Provide positive comments and feedback. • Value student opinions & show trust of students by giving them responsibilities.

  7. 2. Need for Self Esteem (growth need) • These involve needs for both self-esteem and for the esteem a person gets from others. • These include the need for things that reflect on self-esteem, personal worth, social recognition and accomplishment. IN EDUCATION: • If a student lacks self-esteem, they may still be able to channel their energy towards their education, perhaps making education their area of strength to build from. • Provide these students with low-esteem more boosts. • Focus on student strengths & assets (learning styles) • Differentiate instruction based on individual needs. • Recognize effort, not just outcome

  8. 1. Need for Self Actualization (growth need) • Highest level of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. • Desire for self-fulfillment, "What a (wo)man can be, he must be “. • Must first achieve and master all previous needs. IN EDUCATION: • Expect students to do their best. • Give freedom to explore and discover on their own. • Connect learning to real life.

  9. Need for Self-Esteem Need for Love & a Sense of Belonging Safety and Security Basic Physical Needs Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Need for Self-Actualization
