  3. El Greco • Born on the isle of Crete in 1541. • Studied art in Venice, Italy before going to Spain in 1577.

  4. El Greco He settled in Toledo, where he painted many religious works for the governor, including: The Burial of the Count of Orgaz

  5. El Greco’s painting style • Realistic vs. Mystical • Good vs. Evil • Light vs. Dark • Delicate vs. Bulky

  6. Diego Velásquez • Born in Sevilla in 1599. • Considered the greatest artist of Spain’s classical era.

  7. Diego Velásquez Painted his first great work at age twenty, The Water Carrier of Seville

  8. Diego Velásquez Several years later, he was appointed royal court artist, a position he held until his death in 1660.
