  2. scar • Od has a scar on thigh, which the old nurse – Eurycleia recognises when she washes his feet. Nearly tells Penelope. He threatens physical violence to the nurse. Covers the scar with his rags/clothes to hide it from Penelope. • A plot device to allow future events to happen • How the scar is got - the story of the scar – the story of the boar – tangent to show it’s oral history, reduces the tension, delays the climax and adds to the idea of the bravery and Myth that is Od • Tells us Eurycleia is wise, closely attached to OD, she was his wet nurse & LOYAL

  3. Lies/ Deception • Ody and the story of his origin • Part Od is playing as beggar • Testing Penelope to check is she still faithful to her husband – wants to check she hasn’t changed – is she still the woman he remembers full of wit and cunning • Is there guilt that she waited and he didn’t? But remember Greek men were expected to: have a wife, a concubine (tire woman) and slaves • Retelling of Penelope’s deception of how she deceived the suitors with the weaving

  4. Odysseus • Wily • Ready to do whatever it takes to preserve his cover • Needs people to prove their loyalty to him – especially women. WHY? • So he knows who he can rely on when taking back the palace • Previous encounters with women saw OD tricked esp Circe – turned crew into pigs and Calypso – wouldn’t let him leave and tried to bribe him with gift of immortality to stay with her. • Only Nausicaa has shown any respect to him, and hasn’t abused him in any way... • Clytemnestra killed Agamemnon the moment he got home. How does he know Pen won’t do the same? • Learns how much Penelope has been prepared to do to keep his memory alive. • Learns which servants are loyal and which are not

  5. Penelope • Nothing new is revealed, it reinforces her loyalty and ingenuity • But Desperate for news of Odysseus which the beggar gives her • Trusts the beggar because he’s able to give her a truthful account of her husband • Allows her husband to realise he can trust her • First time she can socialise with someone whose not after her or her wealth. • Fulfils the role of the host by getting the beggar to tell her his story.

  6. What’s been achieved by the end of 19? • Closure – Penelope is able to come out and speak to someone – reassures her of who she is... • Gives husband and wife a chance to catch up without strings or embarrassment • Od has everything in place to kill the suitors – he has a plan • He’s ready to take back what’s his... • He’s gained Penelope’s trust • It looks like the beggar has the protection of Telemacus, which allows Him free reign to do what he wants; he can go anywhere. No one’s going to pay any attention to him • No one’s going to expect him to do anything dangerous. • The trap has been set...
