  2. Asynchronous IP Mirrors (AIM) • Overview • Asynchronously mirrors select application server data (volumes) to a remote disaster recovery site • Windows, Linux, Unix and Netware volumes • Utilizes TCP/IP protocols over standard IP transport mechanisms (Wan/Lan) to transfer data to the remote site • Transfer speed is a function of the internet transport performance • Easy configuration steps to set up source (local) and destination (remote) relationships • Configured with a GUI at the source site • Interfaces with Snapshot services at the remote site to allow independent access to the data • Offline applications • Backup • Ensures Database Volumes Sets are in synch

  3. AIM (Normal Operation) • AIM Operations • AIM continuously captures incoming write operations into the AIM source buffer • For defined AIM source volumes only • AIM source buffer files containing source volume writes are transferred to the destination site utilizing TCP/IP protocols over the Wan/Lan. • Synch point markers can be inserted into the write stream at any time • Or synch point markers can be inserted into the write stream in conjunction with a Database quiesce point • The AIM destination buffer receives incoming buffer files • Volume write data contained in the buffer files is written to the destination volumes in order • Synch point markers are used to trigger destination volume point-in-time Snapshots • For Backup • For use by other applications

  5. AIM (Initialization) • How to Get started 1.) Temporarily Quiesce application server I/O (e.g., SQL, exchange) 2.) Take a point-in-time snapshot of all configured AIM source volumes 3.) Define source and destination volume relationships using the AIM GUI • Disable AIM transfers over the internet (Wan/Lan) • Blocks transfers to the destination site 4.) Re-start application server I/O 5.) Backup the point-in-time source volume data 6.) Transport backup tapes to the remote site 7.) Restore source volume backup tapes to initialize destination volumes 8.) Enable AIM transfers over the internet (Wan/Lan) • The AIM buffer transfers writes in order to the destination site volumes
