  2. Classification • Kingdom: Animalia (Animals) multicellular and eukaryotic cells • Phylum: Chordata • Class: Amphibian (Frogs, Salamanders and Caecilians) • Order: Caudata • Family: ProteidaeIs an advanced salamander -Waterdogs • Genus: Necturus

  3. Related Animals • Cave Salamander- 7 million years living in the dark Subterranean in central Europe. Lacks skin pigment. • Streamside- Lives in East central US. Male’s are smaller than female. • Blanco river springs(Lungless)-Spends entire life in freshwater and has no terrestrial life stages. • Green-Lives in the U.S. region Appalachian. Females are sometimes bigger than males.

  4. Habitat Habitat- • Live in rivers, weedy ponds, and some large lakes • Known as larval aquatic salamanders

  5. Movement • Swim like a fish and as fast as a fish • Have wavy gills can flap to help them swim

  6. Feeding • Eat whatever they can catch • Mostly eat crayfish • Also eat insect larvae, small fish and eggs, aquatic worms, snails, and other amphibians • Eaten by Large fish, snakes, wading birds • Avoids predators by hiding under logs, rocks and thick vegetation(weeds and plants)

  7. Circulation/Respiration Respiration • Barely breaths air, uses gills • Pumps air through their lungs Circulation • They have 3 chambered heart • 2 Atria • 1 Ventricle

  8. Reproduction • Courtship and Breeding occurs in fall/winter in the southern • Males join females in a sheltered area (under rocks and weedy plants) • Females pick up sperm in their cloaca until spring • Fertilization and development occurs in the spring (1 or 2 months long until its hatched)

  9. Nervous System • The skin has a sense organ -It detects water movement and pressure changes • Locates prey by sense of smell • Use small eyes to see light • Communication used for Courtship by the female and male to plan mating D’Asia

  10. Interesting Facts About Necturus • They sound like dogs barking. • Life span up to 20 years. • They are solitary animals. • Come together only to reproduce. • Active all year around never hibernate.
