  2. What is Google Earth? Google Earth is a freeware for all the major operating systems. It has different capabilities that can be utilized to improve using technology in the classroom. A 3D representation of the virtual globe can be obtained easily using concision, responsive and friendly-user interface. 2

  3. KML & KMZ Data Files KMZ is a compressed form of KML files that can be transferred via email or hyperlink KMZ is used for storing Placemarks, Images, videos and other media in Google Earth. 3

  4. Zoom, Pan, Tilt and Rotate Add Placemarks Open a .kmz file Google Earth Tools Add Annotations Print, Email and share Google Earth content Add Photos View 3D terrain of a place Create and display layers Save Placemarks to My Places in a .kmz file Embed media Record a video for a tour Draw a path Use Google Search Add 3D models Find a location Use the Ruler to measure distances Create Links Display featured content 4

  5. Google Earth Utilities • Develop the students’ enquiry skills • Support Hands-on activities. • Create dynamic presentation. • Enforce Project Based Learning through different class and homework assignments. • Enrich discussions with imagery and maps and make connections. • Integrate Cross-Curricular activities for Math, Literature, Science and Geography. • Enhance students’ Exploration, Interaction and collaboration 5

  6. Google Earth in Math Measurements o Use real time coordinates to demonstrate distance calculation between two points. o Estimate and calculate the area of a certain 2D/3D shape. o Estimate and calculate the volume of a complex 3D. Basic Concepts o Understand Point, Line, Path & Polygon o Understand Units of length, area and volume o Understand Unit Conversion o Angles 3D Shapes o Understand the concepts of different 3D shapes such as Sphere, Prism, Pyramid and Cylinder. o Create a 3D complex shape. o Locate a 3D shape on a particular point. 6

  18. Objectives i. Specify how well Google Earth is known and used by the targeted students ii. Identify reasons for using Google Earth by the students iii. Set up a plan for a professional development program for the subject teachers on using Google Earth iv. Identify other popular software used for the same target Survey Conclusions i) Google Earth is well known but not used as an interactive technology tool in the classrooms ii) Many students are using Google Earth to locate their houses, which means that the software is an attractive one but students are not aware of its utilities. iii) Subject teachers should enhance the use of Google Earth as a powerful tool to visualize their projects. iv) Professional staff development needs be conducted to increase the teachers’ awareness to the use of Google Earth. v) Phone apps are easier to use by the students. 18
