  1. Word Words

  2. Base Words A word that can stand alone in its simplest form. It has nothing added to it. Examples: Heat Write Read Pack

  3. Root Word The form of a word after all affixes are removed - does not stand alone. Examples: fin, ped, pod, vis, aud

  4. Affix A word element, such as a prefix or suffix, that is attached to a base or root word.

  5. Prefixes A group of letters added to the beginning of a base word. They change the meaning of the base word. Un + happy = unhappy Re + do = redo

  6. Suffixes A group of letters added to the end of a base word. They change the meaning of the base word. wonder + ful = wonderful rest + ful = restful

  7. Syllable A part of a word that has one vowel sound with or without consonants coming before or after. saxophone - sax o phone (3)

  8. Multisyllabic A word of many syllables. trombone - trom bone (2) cymbal - cym bal (2)

  9. Contraction A shortening of two words put together by leaving out a sound or a letter. can + not = can’t it + is = it’s

  10. Antonym A word of opposite meaning. hot / cold

  11. Synonym A word having the same or nearly the same meaning as another word in the same language. school / academy

  12. Word Family A group of words having a common phonic element as in bite, kite despite or words that have the same root or base word.

  13. Homonym One of two or more words spelled and pronounced alike but different in meaning the noun "bear" and the verb "bear”

  14. Homophone One of two or more words pronounced alike but different in meaning or spelling "to," "too," and "two”

  15. Homograph One of two or more words spelled the same but different in pronunciation or meaning. minute (unit of time), minute (very small) present ( a gift), present (in attendance)

  16. Compound Word Two words joined together to make a new word with a new meaning. cup + cake = cupcake
