  1. Alliance Water and Cities Sharing Challenges and Solutions

  2. THREE CITIESSIMILAR CHALLENGES

  3. Degradation of ecosystems and natural capital, combined with expansion of the urban area, are common characteristics of the Rio de Janeiro, Bogotá and Mexico City.

  4. For Bogotá, 95% of the fresh water comes from paramos and forests, located in the neighboring municipalities (Chingaza, Sumapaz, Guerrero and Guacheneque).

  5. For Rio de Janeiro, drinking water comes 90% from a shared basin by two states (Guandu River Basin and Paraiba do Sul River Basin).

  6. For Mexico, 25% of the water comes from the region (Cuenca Valle de Mexico, the Balsas and Lerma-Chapala), while 75% comes from groundwater aquifers in the metropolitan area.

  7. Water and Cities Alliance was created to catalyze efforts in different cities across the globe to develop and share challenges and solutions, helping societies to be more resilient and adapt to the effects of scarcity and regular access to water sources.

  8. THE APPROACH To facilitate the coordination of technical, operational and financial efforts to implement actions that contribute to the protection and recovery of the natural heritage of which depends on water resources and supporting the competitiveness and sustainability of the three cities.

  9. THE OPPORTUNITY The initiative creates opportunities for partnership, experience exchange, development of common projects, capacity building and policy.

  10. OUR VISION As cities invest in protecting and restoring their natural capital, they will secure water regulation, supply and storage for the future, while being better-adapted and more resilient to extreme climatic events.

  11. CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL NICHE AND ROLE With CI’s support, each city is implementing efforts for conservation, restoration and sustainable production to recover ecosystem services and to develop policies to address land degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change.
