  1. Acts 10: 9-16 Rise Kill and Eat What does God’s word say about Food?

  2. Free to Eat, Wise to Choose1 Cor 6:12-13 • All things are legal, not all things are beneficial • Christ came to set us free, and doesn’t want us in bondage to anything – this is two fold: not bound to laws/rules and not bound by addictions due to our tendency to excess • Making wise, spiritually guided food choices is just as important to our freedom as avoiding abuse of drugs, alcohol, or sex

  3. Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2

  4. 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have of God, and you are not your own? For you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. 1 Corinthians 10:31: Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

  5. Biblical Nutrition Choices • God’s word has a lot to say about what we should eat • He wants us to submit our will to His in this area • He desires that we be in health, so that we are fit for His service

  6. Which Diet really works? • Low Fat diets – Eliminate fats but eat lots of pasta, bread, etc. Reportedly lowers cholesterol and risk of heart disease; this has led to more obesity • Low Carb diets – Restrict intake of Carbs but eat all the fat you want • FDA Food Pyramid - Designed by Dept of Agriculture and “Big Farm” lobby to sell more government subsidized grain

  7. Confused ???? I sure was !

  8. What’s the answer? • Return to God’s original design – Eat those things which God created and gave us • Enjoy a variety of whole foods – well balanced meals and snacks • As close to natural as you can get • Avoid refined, convenience, artificial food • Make informed, wise choices • Eat more often, but in much smaller portions • Drink more water than anything else

  9. Biblical Foundation Gen 1:29-30 29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for food, and it was so.

  10. Let’s look at what all God said we should eat…

  11. The Curse Genesis 3:17-19 17Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; and you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face you will eat bread, till you return to the ground, …

  12. Even before the flood and long before the Law, there seemed to some understanding that certain animals were ok to eat, some were not: Gen 7:2 Take with you seven pairs—male and female—of each animal I have approved for eating and for sacrifice, and take one pair of each of the others.

  13. Meat only became a regular part of man’s diet after the flood Gen 9:1-4 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. NIV

  14. Dietary Restrictions • Clean and Unclean - Deuteronomy 14:3 • Pulse - Daniel 1:12-16

  15. The Problem Today • Refined and processed food • Hectic lifestyles – time to shop, prepare, cook, and enjoy the blessings God has given us • Food Addictions – “Feel Good” “Taste Good” “Comfort Food”

  16. So what would a “Biblical” diet look like? • A balanced meal or snack should contain the proper balance of 3 Macro Nutrients • These nutrients are all found in the Biblical plan of eating • Minimal cooking methods – the less food is cooked or processed the more healthful

  17. Carbohydrates • Used for fuel by muscle tissue. • Good carbs are “complex” which usually means “whole” such as whole vegetables, whole grains: whole wheat, brown rice, oats, barley, whole potatoes with skins, fruit with edible peel, root vegetables. These are also “High Fiber” • Bad Carbs are “simple” which means they have been refined. Most are either high in sugar or quickly converted to sugar (HFC). White bread, peeled potatoes, white rice, pasta, donuts and other pastries and most baked goods, sweetened beverages including fruit juice.

  18. Protein • Used for cell building - Lean healthy proteins include: fish, poultry, lean beef, venison, lamb, goat, beans, legumes, tree nuts, soy products, minimally processed dairy, eggs. 25% - 30% of the calories in every meal or snack

  19. Fat • Used by internal organs and other tissues; Essential for good health • EAT Good Fat: Natural sources, little refinement such as: Olives, avocado, coconut, tree nuts, seeds; The oils from these can be eaten as is without cooking or processing. Also oily fish: (tuna, salmon, mackerel, anchovy ) when broiled, baked, or grilled on low heat. • AVOID BAD FAT: Already refined or requires high or prolonged heat to break down into edible form. Shortening, lard, most “cooking oil”, hydrogenated margarines, processed cheese (yellow), anything “deep fried”, fatty meats such as most pork or some “prime” beef cuts.

  20. Summary • Eat MORE Plant based (Garden) – fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans/legumes, green leafy vegetables, nuts, berries, etc. Should be the largest segment of our diet: 1/2 or more • East LESS Animal based – “Clean meats”: Fish, chicken, turkey, lamb, venison, veal, eggs, unprocessed white cheeses, whole milk, lean beef: No more than 1/3 of daily caloric intake. • Limited or seldom – Fatty meats such as top beef cuts, pork products, seafood/shellfish, • Completely Avoid – refined sugar, refined flour, sweetened beverages, fast food, convenience food, fried food, white pasta, white breads, etc.

  21. 1 Corinthians 6:12 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are beneficial. All things are lawful, but I will not be mastered by anything. 1 Corinthians 10:31 So then, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you may do, do all for the honor and glory of God.
