  5. Aerosols: Air Quality and Climate Microscopic processes -> Global effects

  6. AAQC Philosophy Measurers Modelers

  7. AAQC Focus Areas • Organics • Mass fraction • Chemical species • Sampling strategy • Aerosol size distributions • Number-based phenomena • Size-resolved chemical composition • Optical properties • Aerosol/Cloud interactions

  8. A Multiphase Timeline NO3- f(RH) SO4= NH4+ se BC Heterogeneous chemistry Cloud chemistry Mn+ Acidification Visibility Volatile components Biogeochemical cycles Organics Nuclear Winter Climate Gaia - Earth Systems Science Radiative forcing Human Health

  9. AAQC Goals: 1 • Determine specific issues related to aerosols and clouds that are common to the topics of climate, air quality and human health • Determine the most pressing measurement and modelling needs in these areas and develop specific programmes for addressing them

  10. AAQC Goals: 2 • Devise joint measurement and modelling strategies that will produce information that is necessary and useful in all three areas • Link with the horizontal activities within ACCENT to create a forum for information exchange between the air quality, health and climate communities

  11. AAQC Goals: 3 • Compile and make available a summary of current nationally-funded research programmes in the areas of aerosols and clouds • Support ACCENT-related activities within the community

  12. AAQC Activities • A series of focused workshops aimed at producing plans for common research strategies that will involve the climate, air quality, health, measuring and modelling communities • A compilation of national research programmes in aerosols, clouds, air quality and climate The Far Side - Gary Larson

  13. AAQC Steering Committee • Kevin Noone, Stockholm University, SE • Urs Baltensperger, PSI, CH • Christina Facchini, CNR, IT • Andrea Flossmann, UBP, FR • Colin O’Dowd, NUIG, IE

  14. Some Issues … • PM10 - PM2.5 - PMx • Sampling strategy

  15. Aerosol Sampling: PMX

  16. Aerosol Sampling: PMX

  17. Aerosol Sampling: Duration Anderson, et al., JAS 60, 119-136, 2003 Rem: Jay Turner yesterday…

  18. New Directions • “Smart” PMx cut size • Continuous sampling as far as possible, but … • Sample duration based on “chemical” forecasts Thanks for your attention!
