Hurray ! A Budget ! • The Office of High Energy Physics receives $908 million this year, • Up 10 percent from FY 2017. • Our international flagship program that consists of LBNF/DUNE and its critical supporting projects, the PIP-II accelerator upgrade and the Integrated Engineering Research Center (IERC), is very well supported in the FY 2018 budget. LBNF/DUNE and PIP-II are fully funded and the budget will allow work to begin in Illinois as well as South Dakota. • Our other major construction projects including Mu2e, the CMS detector upgrades and the LHC accelerator upgrade are fully funded. We are also pleased to see the strong support for the dark matter, dark energy and accelerator programs in the budget. C. Drennan | March 2018 Department Meeting
International News News from Randy • US-Japan Collaboration • Talks • Ion Profile Monitors (IPMs) - Troy • Laser Profile Monitors - Vic • Electron Beam Profile - Randy • Multiwire Development - Gianni • Discussions • BPM Digitizers - Nathan • DCCT Advise - Aisha • IPMs - Jim, Troy and Randy C. Drennan | March 2018 Department Meeting
International News (cont.) • Vic to speak on Mu2e Schottky measurements at ARIES workshop at CERN • Alex to speak on higher-order mode measurements at FAST at IPAC18 in Canada • Gianni to contract with Finland to build them some wire planes. C. Drennan | March 2018 Department Meeting
P I P 2 I T Beam Run News from Vic Scarpine and Sasha Shemyakin • PIP2IT runs with beam and is expected to continue running until middle of May. • RFQ power is running CW. • The goal is to run quasi-CW beam -- 20 Hz, 49.8 ms on, 0.2 ms off (Vic) • Depending on the state of the MPS, max duty factor so far is 20 Hz, 1.0 ms on. (Sasha) • Running multiple beam studies with 10 microsec beam. • Nathan studying the BPM system (3rd harmonics) to understand its response to various bunch systematics. C. Drennan | March 2018 Department Meeting
P I P 2 I T Beam Run (cont.) News from Vic Scarpine and Sasha Shemyakin • Aisha working to calibrate the beam current measurements to quantify the resolution and transmission efficiencies. We've also started looking at the quality of beam current measurements with the new Bergoz ACCT. • John Diamond, Andrea and Troy are working with Arden to commission the MPS for long pulse operation. • The wire scanner and vacuum chamber for the laser wire are still in works (have not been installed). • Additional "Andrea's units" providing biasing and buffering for multiple PIP2IT elements were installed and are operational. • Our department is supporting requests for other instrumentation, such as operating the Fast Faraday Cup and the high-bandwidth wall current monitor. C. Drennan | March 2018 Department Meeting
P I P 2 I T Beam Run (cont.) From Sasha • Strange pattern of the background noise in the MEBT Allison scanner is found • Requesting calibration of Toroids/ACCT with RF on. • Requesting commission the front end reading into MPS the scraper channels. C. Drennan | March 2018 Department Meeting
