  4. GOALS, EXPECTATIONS and STANDARDS • GOALS: • Learn the basics • Good classroom behavior and discipline (this can be hard with a noise maker in your hand!) • Give 100% every day • Practice time management skills: homework, daily practice, test prep • Commitment to group and to your craft

  5. GOALS, EXPECTATIONS and STANDARDS • EXPECTATIONS: • Be on time • Have everything you need • Attend class regularly and be at all concerts • DO YOUR HOMEWORK! • Prepare for tests • Be prepared to stick with it for at least a year

  6. GOALS, EXPECTATIONS and STANDARDS • CLASS STANDARDS: • Review and retain the basics of music theory and instrument technique • Finish Tradition of Excellence Book 1 • Become proficient on the basics of their instrument (evaluated through objective sheets and playing tests)

  7. GOALS, EXPECTATIONS and STANDARDS • INDIVIDUAL STANDARDS • Finish all quarterly and weekly homework as assigned • Be at all rehearsals and concerts • Give your best effort every day!

  8. HOW DO I GET AN “A”??? Band Students are graded on the following: • Major Grade – 75% of total grade • Playing Tests – 50pts each • Written Tests – varied points • Performances – 200pts each • Quarterly Objective Sheets 40 pts each

  9. HOW DO I GET AN “A”??? • Playing Tests: • Periodic based on needs of the group • Students will know ahead of time what they will be tested on • Done during class time • Written Tests: • Used to asses concepts covered during class • Students will know ahead of time what they will be tested on

HOW DO I GET AN “A”??? • Concerts: • 6th grade will participate in 4 concerts: • November • December • March • May • All of these are required • Students must stay for the duration of the concert to get full points unless absence has been approved in advance or unless there is an emergency • Excused absences: any absence that would be considered excused from school. This does not include outside of school sports practices/games.

HOW DO I GET AN “A”??? • Objective Pass-Offs • Tailored to grade level and, many times specific instrument group needs • Designed for students to practice on their own at home and finish at their own pace • Everything is covered in class at some point in the quarter • Can be done after school, via google classroom video submission, and on periodic class days designated as “objective days”

  12. HOW DO I GET AN “A”??? • Minor Grade – 20% of total grade • Written Work – worksheets/review work • Quizzes • Daily Participation – 5% of total grade • 5 points per day

HOW DO I GET AN “A”??? • Quizzes and Written Work • Smaller assessments of the student’s understanding of concepts covered in class • Quizzes could be playing or written • Written work might cover music theory, instrument fingering reviews, note recognition practice, etc. • Daily Participation • Students must be present to receive participation grade • Can be made up if they are absent from school • Students lose part of participation grade if they do not have all needed equipment (instrument, music, pencil, etc.), or if they are disruptive during class.
