  6. New UCTE Requirements • New Teacher Standards mandate revisions in teacher education curriculum by spring 2003, calling for renewed emphasis on school/university linkages and professional development for UCTE faculty. • Technology requirements: All teacher education candidates must now demonstrate competence in educational technology and software. Competence is aligned to County Office of Education standards. • Doctoral program: This cooperative program between Cal Poly and UCSB (starting in 2003) will require I2 and enhanced video interconnection. UCTE

  7. 2002/03 Campus-wide Needs • Lab – Make our UCTE/ITS lab, which is our I2 site, ready and available for student projects (UCTE and when available, for other students) that would use I2 capabilities that are pedagogically sound. • Lab – Continue assisting us in enhancing the usability of the lab for instructors. • Lab and classrooms – Help provide an environment for faculty and student-teacher mentoring that would encourage the use of new technologies (including ones that are I2 accessible): additional Smart classrooms; Regular classrooms with an accessible 100 MB internet connection. • Internet2 champion support – Look for opportunities, ideas and grants that would make use of the I2 capabilities available on campus. UCTE

  8. 2002/03 College-Specific Needs • Conversion of an in house database to the more robust Oracle platform which would allow internet access (also from my.calpoly). • Connecting UCTE specific SIS data to our Oracle data (once our internal database is converted). • Support (along with the library) for GIS applications that could be used by our Secondary Education Program faculty and student-teachers. UCTE

  9. 2002/03 Special Initiatives • Joint Doctoral Program with UCSB – Assistance incorporating the needed technology that would allow distance education in a UCTE classroom/seminar room between four sites: UCSB, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo County Office of Education, and Santa Barbara County Education Office. • Enable the UCTE to establish a portable video conferencing unit that would allow two way communication: • To observe local school rooms where innovative instruction is occurring. • To view the beginning and ending days of a school year. • To provide professional development for UCTE faculty and local in-service teachers.
