  1. Angioplasty in India If you are suffering from coronary artery disease, the arteries in your heart are narrowed or blocked by a sticky material called plaque. Angioplasty is a procedure to restore blood flow through the artery. Angioplasty is a medical process that is usually performed by doctors immediately after a heart attack. Angioplasty is most effective if the doctor performs it within the 24 hours after a heart attack. Angioplasty will reduce the risk of having another heart attack or the need of open-heart bypass surgery. Angioplasty opens blocked arteries and restores normal blood flow to your heart muscle. Angioplasty is not major surgery. Angioplasty is done by placing a catheter (thin tube) through a small puncture in a leg or arm artery to the heart. The blocked artery is opened by inflating a tiny balloon in it. Angioplasty is also called a "percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty." In many cases, they insert a coronary artery stent following angioplasty. The stent helps keep the blood flowing and the artery from narrowing again. Angioplasty can also relieve the symptoms of heart disease if you haven't had a heart attack. 2. How is angioplasty performed? Doctors usually perform angioplasty while people are under local anesthesia. First, they'll make an incision in the arm. They'll insert a catheter with a tiny inflatable balloon on the end into your artery. Doctor guides the catheter up into the blocked coronary artery using X-ray, video and special dyes. Once it's in position, the balloon is inflated to widen the artery. The fatty deposits, or plaque, get pushed against the wall of the artery. This clears the way for blood flow. In some of the cases, the catheter is also equipped with a stainless steel mesh called a stent. The stent is used to hold the blood vessel open and can remain in place after the balloon is deflated and removed. Once the balloon is pulled out, your doctor can also remove the catheter. The procedure may take half an hour to several hours. What types of Procedures are used in Angioplasty? There are several your doctor will choose from. They include: Balloon: A catheter with a small balloon tip is guided to the narrowing in your artery. Once in place, the balloon is magnified to push the plaque and stretch the artery open to boost blood flow to the heart.

  3. Stent: This is a small tube that acts as a scaffold to support the inside your coronary artery. A balloon catheter is placed over a guide wire, puts the stent into your narrowed coronary artery. Once in place, the balloon is magnified, and the stent expands to the size of the artery and holds it open. The balloon is then deflated and removed while the stent stays in place. Over several weeks, your artery heals around the stent. These are often placed during angioplasty to help keep the coronary artery open. The stent is usually made of metal and is permanent. It can also be made of a material that the body absorbs over time. Some stents contain medicine and are designed to reduce the risk of the artery getting blocked again. The doctor will decide if this is the right stent for your blockage. Uses of Angioplasty Uses of angioplasty are:  Coronary angioplasty A coronary angioplasty is a medical procedure to diagnose the narrowed coronary arteries of the heart found in coronary heart disease. These narrowed segments are due to the buildup of cholesterol-laden plaques that are formed due to atherosclerosis. A percutaneous coronary intervention is first performed.  Peripheral Angioplasty Peripheral angioplasty is known as the use of a balloon to open a blood vessel outside the coronary arteries. Peripheral angioplasty is commonly done to treat atherosclerotic narrowing of the abdomen, leg and renal arteries caused by peripheral artery disease. Peripheral angioplasty is used side by side with guide wire, peripheral stenting and an atherectomy.

  4. Carotid Angioplasty Carotid artery stenosis is treated with angioplasty in a procedure called carotid stenting for patients at high-risk for carotid endarterectomy.  Renal Artery Angioplasty Atherosclerotic blockage of the renal artery can be diagnosed with angioplasty with or without stenting of the renal artery. Renal artery stenosis can lead to hypertension and loss of renal function. Click on the "Button" below, If you have any Query/Question regarding "Angioplasty in India" Ask Your Query What can anyone expect Before an Angioplasty? Most people will need a routine blood test and electrocardiogram. These may require separate appointments and are usually scheduled the day before Angioplasty. You won't be able to eat or drink after midnight the evening before. If you wear dentures or a hearing aid, plan to wear them during your angioplasty to help with communication. If you wear glasses, bring them, too. Please tell your doctor or nurse if you are taking diuretics (water pills), insulin, or warfarin (Coumadin).

  5. Also let them know if you are allergic to anything, especially:      Iodine Shellfish X-ray dye Latex or rubber products (such as rubber gloves or balloons) Penicillin-type medications. You'll need to take aspirin before Angioplasty. Make sure to tell your doctor or nurse if you didn't. You'll be awake during it, but you'll get medication to help you relax. What happens after an Angioplasty? If the catheter was put into the artery, you will have to lie flat (without bending your legs) while the groin sheath is in place. A sheet may be placed across your leg with the sheath to remind you to keep it straight. After the sheath is removed, you will have to lie flat for about 6 hours to prevent bleeding, but your nurse can raise your head about two pillows high after 2 hours. Your nurse will tell you when you can get out of bed. It may be sooner than 6 hours if a collagen "plug" was put into your artery. Your team will let you know. You should not eat or drink anything except clear liquids until the groin sheath is removed. That's because you can get nauseated while it's on. Once you can eat, you will be urged to follow a heart- healthy diet.

  6. If your catheter was put into the artery at your wrist or arm, your doctor will put a special bandage on to make sure it heals properly. You will wear this for a couple of hours. The doctor or a nurse will remove it and check to see if your artery has healed enough. You may be admitted to the hospital overnight for observation after Angioplasty. Click on the "Button" below, If you have any Query/Question regarding "Angioplasty in India" Ask Your Query Let your doctor or nurse know right away if you get a fever or have:    Chest pain Swelling Pain in your groin or leg If your groin starts to bleed after you get back home, lie down right away. Take the dressing off and push down where you can feel your pulse in the affected area. If a stent was placed, you'll need to take medications to reduce the odds of a blood clot forming near it. Gradually get back to your regular activities. You should be able to resume your normal stuff after about a week. If your catheter was put into the artery at your wrist or arm, your doctor will put a special bandage on to make sure it heals properly. You'll wear this for a couple of hours. The doctor or a nurse will remove it and check to see if your artery has healed enough. Are there any side effects of angioplasty?

  7. 35 % - 45% of the people who have undergone Angioplasty experience recurrent narrowing of arteries in the areas where the balloons were inserted. Stents can be placed to prevent the blocks from recurring. There is the risk of coronary artery damage during Angioplasty. Though extremely rare there are chances of a stroke happening during Angioplasty. Kidney damage may result due to the dye used during Angioplasty. The doctor usually uses a very limited amount of dye if you have a history of kidney problems and also makes sure you are well hydrated during Angioplasty. Though rare, heavy bleeding may occur sometimes when the catheter is inserted and you may require blood transfusion. There is risk of blood clots or scar tissue forming in the stent. During Angioplasty you may experience irregular heart rhythm, which usually corrects itself after Angioplasty is complete. There may be side effects from the medicines you need to take after Angioplasty.        How long will it take to recover from angioplasty? You can return to normal activities after around 4 days of surgery although, you should avoid any strenuous work or lifting any object heavier than 6 Kg's for at least 4 weeks after angioplasty. You also need to avoid driving, long drives, strenuous exercises such as swimming and hiking for at least 4 weeks after angioplasty.
