  1. The AQUA-RICH project Main new ideas • Use RICH technique (common in HEP) • Use multiple scattering for momentum determination Show proof of principle ? Basic problem: MANPOWER Milind Diwan UCLA Dec 5, 2003 With Thanks to Kai Zuber and The late Tom Ypsilantis How to realise 1 Mt

  2. Mega Detector for DUSEL • Requirements: Very ambitious ! • 500 kTons fiducial mass for both Proton decay and neutrino astro-physics and neutrino beam physics. • ~10 % energy resolution on quasielastic events • Muon/electron discrimination at <1% • 1, 2, 3 track event separation (need separation at 5 deg.) • Showering NC event rejection at factor of ~15 • Low threshold (~10-15 MeV) for supernova search • Part of the detector could have lower threshold for solar neutrino detection. • Time resolution of ~few ns for pattern recognition and background reduction. • Perhaps am imaging detector is better than SuperK type water Cherenkov detector ?

  3. Collaboration Original idea by Thomas Ypsilantis

  4. Simulation

  5. Reconstruction Scattering angle vs. momentum 8,12,16 GeV muons A. Großheim, K. Zuber in prep.

  6. AQUA - RICH 3 ton prototype at CERN PMTs HPDs Mirror

  7. PMT development

  8. Lense Design: have obtained +- 72 deg. View. Converts angle to position. Use pixel photo-multiplier or PMT array. (P. Takacs)

  9. Conclusions • Can also think of detector as Cherenkov angle measurement. • What angular resolution needed ? • How to get information from beginning of showering events ? • Could we use lenses instead of mirrors? • Simulations need to extend to showers and low energy events. • A hybrid detector of proximity and mirror (or lense) focussed imaging?
