  1. LESSON 13 “IN CHRIST” What does it mean to be “IN CHRIST,” and how does one attain this covenant relationship?

  2. DEFINITION • THE PHRASE IN CHRIST CAN BE USED IN DIFFERENT WAYS. THE STATEMENT COULD BE MADE TO HAVE FAITH “IN CHRIST,” AND CHRIST WOULD THEN BE THE OBJECT OF THAT FAITH. • THE PHRASE “IN CHRIST” MANY TIMES IS RELATIONAL, ME LIVING IN CHRIST. A COVENENT RELATIONSHIP ESTABLISHED. IT COULD ALSO BE REFERING TO IN HIS BODY, “THE CHURCH”

  3. RELATIONAL • Jesus makes the statement in John 10:38 that he is in the Father, and the Father is in Him. • Jn 10:37-38 Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that theFather is in me, and I in the Father.”

  4. GOD PURPOSED US “IN CHRIST” • IN ANY CASE, IT REFERS TO A POSITION OUTSIDE AND APART FROM THE WORLD, WHICH WAS PREDETERMINED BY GOD BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD. • 2Ti 1:9 who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us “in Christ Jesus”before the beginning oftime,

  5. Contrast: WORLD & “IN CHRIST” • THERE IS A CONTRAST MADE BETWEEN LIVING IN THE WORLD, OR LIVING IN CHRIST, WHICH IS APART FROM THE WORLD, AND IN COVENENT RELATION TO GOD. PAUL MAKES THE STATEMENT “IT IS NO LONGER I WHO LIVE, BUT CHRIST LIVES IN ME.” • IT IS THIS COVENET RELATIONSHIP THAT WE WANT TO LOOK AT.

  6. HE CALLED YOU OUT OF THE WORLD • Eph 2:1-3 • As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

  7. IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF THE WORLD • Jn 15:19 If you belonged to the world, itwould love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosenyou out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

  8. OBEYED, AND NO LONGER OF THE WORLD. • Jn 17:6&7 • “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. • Obeyed What? Or obeyed how? MORE ON THIS LATER.

  9. NOT OF THE WORLD • Jn 17:15&16 • My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. • We are to live in this world, but we are not of the world, not worldly, because our citizenship is in Heaven.

  10. OUR CITIZENSHIP IS IN HEAVEN • Phil 3:19&20 • Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, • NOTE THE CONTRAST, THE FOCUS OF ONE GROUP IS THE WORLD, THE FOCUS OF THE OTHER IS CHRIST JESUS.

  11. A POINT TO PONDER! • AS WE LOOK AT THE EPISTLES, PAUL IS ADDRESSING PEOPLE ALREADY IN A COVENET RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. • THE CHURCH AT EPHESUS, CORINTH, ROME, GALATIA OR PHILIPPI, ARE ALL MADE UP OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE ALREADY OBEYED THE GOSPEL.

  12. LEFT SIDE WILL CONTAIN THE CONDITION OR STATEMENTS FOR THE WORLD. WHERE WE ALL COME FROM AS SINNERS. RIGHT SIDE WILL CONTAIN THE “IN CHRIST” COMMENTS, AND PASSAGES TO SHOW THE BIBLES TEACHING. “THE PLACE OF THE SAVED!” SPLIT SCREEN

  13. Living in the world we are gentiles living estranged, and far off from God. Even if you were born of the Jewish nationality, you are at this time a gentile because God has pruned off the olive branches, That are not of faith. No one is born into the family of God by his natural blood line. (Romans 11:13-21) Now brought near Eph 2:13-15 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in his flesh the law with its commandments and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new man out of the two, thus making peace, IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  14. Unsanctified, not set apart for God, but living a worldly life, most likely involved in self gratification. SANCTIFIED IN CHRIST Phil 1:1 Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the saints in ChristJesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and deacons: The Saints are the sanctified people that make up the Church at Philippi, and it includes everyone. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  15. NO PRIZE, NO HOPE THE PRIZE, A HEAVENLY HOPE Phil 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward inChrist Jesus. All of us who are mature should take such a view of things. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  16. WITHOUT THE PEACE OF GOD. WITH OUT RECONCILIATION, WE ARE STILL GODS ENEMIES. LIVES IN THE PEACE WITH GOD WHICH GOD SUPPLIES. Phil 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in ChristJesus. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  17. IN THE WORLD, WITH OUT THE PEACE OF GOD, WITHOUT RECONCILIATION, AND STILL IN YOUR SINS. RECONCILED TO GOD! 2Co 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  18. WHY IS THERE PEACE • THE WAR IS OVER, AND RECONCILIATION IS MADE. GOD HAS RECONCILED US (the in Christ) BACK TO HIMSELF, WE NOW HAVE OUR SINS FORGIVEN, AND PEACE WITH GOD. WE CAN APPROCH THE THRONE OF GOD WITH CONFIDENCE, AND ASSURANCE. THIS CONFIDENCE THEN GIVES ME PEACE.

  19. LACKING IN GODS BLESSINGS. Not that the world is not blessed by God, they are, but they are lacking, and do not receive the riches and benefits of the cross. BLESSED BY GOD Phil 4:19 And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  20. NO GRACE, People that do not come out of the world, will receive the wages of sin, and not the GRACE that God so wants to provide. Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. PAUL CLAIMS GRACE, FAITH & LOVE OF GOD 1Ti 1:14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in ChristJesus. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  21. THE WORLD HAS ONLY DEATH: Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord THE PROMISE OF LIFE: 2Ti 1:1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus Ro 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in ChristJesus our Lord. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  22. THE WORLD HAS ONLY THE FEARFUL EXPECTATION OF GODS WRATH, AND NO SALVATION IS FOUND ANYWARE. SALVATION IS FOUND IN CHRIST: 2Ti 2:10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  23. STAND ON YOUR OWN RECORD OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND STAND CONDEMED. THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH STATES IF YOU SIN YOU DIE. IT ONLY TAKES 1 SIN TO MAKE YOU A SINNER. NOT CONDEMNED OF SIN. Ro 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are inChrist Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the lawof sin and death. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  24. IN THE WORLD YOU ARE A LAW BREAKER, AND SINNER. 1Jn 3:4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  25. IN THE WORLD YOU ARE STILL AT ODDS WITH GOD. EVEN ENEMIES OF GOD BECAUSE THE WAR IS NOT OVER AND YOU HAVE NOT BEEN RECONCILED. RECONCILED TO GOD. 2Co 5:18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. IN THE WORLD OR IN CHRIST

  26. HOW DOES ONE ENTER INTO CHRIST? • Gal 3:26-28 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. • IT IS IN BAPTISM ONE IS BORN OF GOD, BORN AGAIN! BORN INTO CHRIST!

  27. HOW DOES ONE ENTER INTO CHRIST • ONE MUST BE BORN OF GOD! • 1Jn 3:9 • No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.

  28. HOW DOES ONE ENTER INTO CHRIST • Eph 4:22-24 • You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

  29. BORN AGAIN • Jn 3:3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’” “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’

  30. OBEY HIM • 1Jn 3:24 • Those who obey his commandslive in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.

  31. OBEY HIS COMMANDS • 1Jn 4:13&14 • We know that we live in him andhe in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. • QUESTION WHEN AND HOW DID YOU RECEIVE THE SPIRIT OF GOD?

  32. OBEY HIM • Mt 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

  33. JESUS COMMANDS • JESUS STATEMENT PLAINLY STATES HE HAS ALL AUTHORITY, THEREFOR, BASED ON HIS AUTHORITY GO MAKE DISCIPLES, AND TO BAPTIZE THEM. THIS COULD NOT BE ANY PLAINER. GO BACK AND READ SLIDE 28.

  34. EXAMPLES THEY WERE JUST TOLD THAT THEY HAD MURDERED THE MESSIAH THEIR KING, THE ONE THAT THEY HAD WAITED FOR, AND THEY ASKED WHAT SHALL WE DO. • Ac 2:37-38 • When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and bebaptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of theHoly Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.

  35. THE NEW BIRTH • This all ties together, the new birth is the birth from God, and you are born new when you obey the command of Jesus and are baptized “INTO CHRIST.” • THIS IS WHEN YOU MEET JESUS AT THE CROSS, IT’S A REINACTMENT OF HIS DEATH BURIAL AND RESURRECTION, BUT IT IS YOUR OWN DEATH, BURAL AND RESURRECTION! IT IS ALSO THE TIME YOU RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. READ AGAIN SLIDES 28 &29.

  36. DEATH BURIAL AND RESURRECTION (THE GOSPEL) • Ro 6:3-7 Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried withhim through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in hisdeath, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection. For we know that our old selfwas crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— because anyone who has died has been freed from sin.

  37. OBEYED THAT FORM OF TEACHING • Ro 6:17 But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you wholeheartedly obeyed the form of teaching to which you were entrusted. You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness. • The teaching was the death burial, and resurrection of Christ, the Form was Baptism, emersion in water.

  38. BRAND NEW • There you have it being born again makes you new. You can have confidence to stand before your creator, innocent, pure and HOLY, because God has made you that way. THE CROSS IS THE ONLY ANSWER FOR THE SIN AND SEPERATION OF MAN FROM HIS CREATOR. OBEY THE GOSPEL TODAY.

  39. JUSTIFIED BY FAITH & OBEDIENCE • One is saved by Grace through Faith, but this does not exclude obedience, it would naturally include obedience. • Jas 2:23&24 • And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is justified by what he does and notby faith alone.

  40. OBEY AND BE BORN OF GOD • Jn 1:12 & 13 • Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

  41. SOME WILL TELL YOU • Many will quickly say baptism does not save you. They will tell you salvation took place before you are baptized. • The word of God says: 1Pe 3:20&21 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ,

  42. A GOOD CONCONCE TWARD GOD • All will stand excused or condemned by their own thoughts, and consciences. Baptism gives us a clear conscience and the confidence we need. • Ro 2:15 since they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearingwitness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) This will take place on the day when God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares

  43. CONSIDER • If one could be saved prior to obedience of the Gospel, they would be saved while they are still in their sins. As sins are forgiven at baptism. Yes, Yes they are! Look at Acts 2:38&39 again: Ac 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ forthe forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom theLord our God will call.”

  44. CONSIDER • NOW CONSIDER WHAT JESUS SAID IN MATTHEW 26:28 JESUS IS SPEAKING AND HE SAYS: DRINK FROM IT, ALL OF YOU. THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE COVENANT,WHICH IS POURED OUT FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESSOF SINS. • The phrase is the same as Acts 2:38, the reason for Jesus pouring out his blood, is the same reason for YOUR baptism (THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS!)

  45. BLOOD OF THE COVENENT • I DON’T KNOW ANYONE THAT WOULD SAY JESUS WAS SAYING, IN MATTHEW 26:28 THAT HIS BLOOD WAS BEING SHED BECAUSE YOU ALREADY HAD THE FORGIVENESS OF YOUR SINS. NEITHER MAY WE SAY WE ARE BEING BAPTIZED BECAUSE WE HAVE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. FORGIVENESS OF SINS IS THE PURPOSE OF CHRIST’S BLOOD BEING SHED, AND THE PURPOSE OF OUR BAPTISM.

  46. CONSIDER PAUL • Paul is giving his defense after a riot, He stands to give his defense to the crowd: He tells how he was struck blind on the road to Damascus, and how a man named Ananias came to see him. Then he says: Acts 22:15 & 16 Ananias told him “You will be his witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.” Check with Acts 9:18, and you will see he was baptized.

  47. IS THIS NOT STRANGE • Would this not be a strange thing to tell a man that was blind, and praying for two days if it were not true. Paul was very repentant, as he had spent two days in prayer, but He was still in his sins, until he washed them away, in the new birth process.

  48. CONSIDER • IF ONE CAN BE SAVED PRIOR TO BAPTISM, THEY ARE SAVED WITHOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT. • 1Jn 4:13-15 • We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.

  49. When did he give us his spirit? • Again notice Acts 2:38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. • When one is born in baptism, they receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is required to be “IN CHRIST.”

  50. Paul considered baptism and receiving the Holy Spirit as the same thing • Paul at Ephesus See Acts 19:1-5 • Notice Paul’s question did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? He then asks with what baptism did you receive? Why? Because Paul equates the receiving of the Holy Spirit with Baptism. He then lays his hands on them for the miraculous manifestation of the Holy Spirit.
