  1. Science has a unity with other disciplines Science, philosophy and mathematics mesh together to give support to each other. A smart research student is aware of this and uses the sharp tools from a variety of disciplines

  2. For example, what have Occam’s razor and the views of Karl Popper have in common?Succinctness and elegance from the use of the razor – sometimes called parsimony, gives simplicity and this simplicity is one pursuit of science. Explanatory powers in our theories can improve by making them simpler.E.g. Think of Copernicus’s beautiful model compared to what it replaced; or Darwin’s clever insight.

  3. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Occam's_razorAs a starting place, this is fine….. Google ‘Occam’s razor’ and select the first site – the Wiki.Scroll down or use menu to look at the “Karl Popper” connectionFind:“Our preference for simplicity may be justified by its falsifiability criterion: We prefer simpler theories to more complex ones "because their empirical content is greater; and because they are better testable" (Popper 1992). “Now check out the mathematical entry above that of Popper. We slide seamlessly into probability theory and statisticsCheck out the links from this wiki to explore…….

  4. But for us, in ASRE600(Lab. Tech.), in our small corner of the South Pacific and in our infinite ignorance, it means that ourresearch proposals should be simple to be beautiful and meaningful.Strive to keep the background noise down soyour music can be heard. Go through the drafts of your proposals for this course and search for simpler questions to ask to inform your research topics; simplify sections and remove redundancy. Include nothing that is not needed for your story. If you are uncertain if is needed, it may belong in an appendix.

  5. Your research proposal should demonstrate the you can wield Occam’s razor and that your methods are the best to inform your research question.jmc may 2014
