  1. Implementation of the“Twents Onderwijs Model”:Implications for current ES students4-6-2013

  2. What is the “Twents Onderwijs Model” (TOM)? The new programme: European Public Administration (EPA) Implications for current ES students Planning Questions?

  3. TOM Main reason for new curricula: low success rates (high drop out, considerable delay in study process) Main characteristics TOM: • Integrated modules of 15 EC will replace stand-alone courses (of 5 EC each) • Project-based • Studieload: 40 hrs/week (currently appr. 25 hrs/week)

  4. TOM & EPA Currently we have two BSc programmes: Bestuurskunde (Dutch) and European Studies (English) Both programmes run under the accreditation for Public Administration ES is a spin-off (“daughter”) of the original Bestuurskunde programme BSK and European Studies will be integrated into one English-language programme: European Public Administration Basic characterics of the programmes (= Twente-approach to public administration) remain unchanged ...

  5. European Public Administration: Is multi-disciplinary: economics, law, political science, sociology Pays a lot of attention to research methods and methods for policy analysis & design Is not just about “government”, but is about “multi-level governance” (global > EU > national > regional > local) Is about “multi-actor governance” (public-private networks/partnerships) Pays attention to public management (management of public organizations)

  6. EPA consists of three years 6 core modules (1 ½ year), emphasis on proper introduction into the four core disciplines + general governance domain Large optional part (1 year) Specialization in “level of governance”: global, European, national/regional/local Possibility to strengthen your research & professional skills Possibility to do an internship Possibility for a –foreign- exchange programme Thesis semester (½ year) The programme

  8. Multi-disciplinary project themes

  9. Implications for current ES students EPA will start in September 2013 (1st year) and is then phased-in (2nd year in 2014-2015, 3rd year in 2015-2016) Current cohorts of students (who started in September 2012 or before) will follow their”own “old” programme, which will be phased-out What happens to the courses from the “old” ES programme? • 2012-2013: 1st year courses are offered for the last time • 2013-2014: 2nd year courses will be offered for the last time • 2014-2015: 3rd year courses (including UT-minors) will be offered for the last time Re-takes 1st year courses in 2013-2014, of 2nd year courses in 2014-2015, of 3rd year courses in 2015-2016

  10. Note: study-plan needed in the case of 3rd take! More generally: contact the study counsellor early (end of Summer 2013) in case you still have unfinished courses (this goes for 2nd and 3rd year students as well) To be decided (after BSA, early September 2013): “bezemklassen” = extra offer of teaching (lectures and/or tutorials) for those courses that are still left for a large group of students In addition: individual tailor-made solutions: • Capita selectacourses (individual finalization of courses under supervision of teacher, by means of a paper or oral exam) • Participation in (parts of) EPA modules • Student can be completely “transferred” to the new EPA programme (if possible with partial exemptions)

  11. Diploma & diploma supplement Currently: • Diploma “Bestuurskunde (track: European Studies)” • Additional information in so-called diploma supplement As from 1/9/2013 (forallstudentsgraduating!) • Diploma: European Public Administration • Additional information in so-called diploma supplement Propaedeusewill no longerbe part of new EPA curriculum But currentstudentscan get a P-diploma (deadline: Sept. 1, 2014)
