  2. Scenario • New four story classroom and office building with: • Water-cooled chilled water plant with 2 each chillers, towers CHW pumps and CW pumps. All components have VSDs so they are efficient at part-load. • Central built up VAV air handling unit with 2 supply fans, 6 relief fans and air-side economizer. • PBX rooms on each floors located near the shaft. • Small data center on the first floor (3,000 ft2 <100w/sf). • The PBX rooms and data center need 24X7 cooling, the rest of the space operates ~3,000 hrs/yr.

  3. Design options As a group consider the following design alternatives for serving the PBX rooms and data center: • VAV boxes from the central AHU • Dedicated CHW fan coils • Dedicated split-system air-cooled DX units • Dedicated water-cooled DX units

  9. Consider the following attributes • Energy • First cost • Maintenance impact • Spatial impact • Redundancy and reliability

  10. Score Sheet Score for that system and attribute Relative importance of attributes Sum of the product of all weights and scores for that system. Higher is better.
