  2. History • In 1921, Franklin D. Roosevelt, four-time US president, traveled to Warm Springs, GA for polio treatments and built his Little White House. Roosevelt loved the quaint town of Warm Springs. FDR’s Civilian Conservation Corps built many of the structures and features during the Great Depression era. FDR’s park now offers camping, cottages, picnicking, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, and horseback riding. Pine Mountain Trail is over 23 miles long, but offers many day hikes, like Dowell’s Knob, Wolfden, Longleaf, Big Poplar, and Overlook Loops. There are also smaller trails like the Mountain Creek Nature Trail (which I have hiked), Pool Trail, and Delano Trail (the smallest at .08 mile).

  3. Field Trip Plan • Take your students on a field trip hiking the Pine Mountain Trail, which is only about 30 minutes from Columbus and is full of history, wildlife, flora, and nature. Observe nature in the raw, enjoy the outdoor physical activities, learn about volunteering, relive a rich history, picnic with classmates, and learn about a local legend. Students will learn about the environment, local and US history, social studies, natural science of trees, streams, mountains, plants, and other wildlife.

  4. FDR Introduction Biography • Watch a Franklin D. Roosevelt biography video in the classroom before the trip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Nyg6jlssWs&feature=related

  5. Reflection and Reading Enhancement • I also know the Librarian Mike Shadix at the FDR library in Warm Springs that will come and speak to the class or we could stop by the library after the hike. He can show the vast amount of resources FDR contribute to.

  6. Our Last Stop • Our class will also stop by the Little White House and do the Tour.
