Students and Faculty Provide Feedback on Out-of-Class Experiences Faculty Survey Results The out-of-class experience subgroup, part of the Academic Experience Implementation Team, conducted a survey of students and faculty. The purpose was to ascertain from students: • if they wanted access to these experiences; • if they would pay extra to have these experiences; and • what they hoped to gain from these experiences. In their survey, the faculty were asked: • what out-of-class experiences do they currently practice; • what are the most effective experiences used; and • what support do you need to make these experiences more effective? Do students want out-of-class experiences? We received responses from faculty representing 23 departments. The faculty survey asked for more detailed information so as to provide for more specific targets of what was needed to enhance existing and implement new out-of-class experiences as part of the Winona Experience. Here we provide a list of items defined as needs for these activities. Our survey demonstrated that students do want out of class experiences. There is a clear disparity, in most cases, between the number of students wanting those activities but actually have access to them. Travel Study Travel support for students Travel support for faculty Faculty release for establishing travel sites Logistical support Study Abroad Counseling support Administrative support Service Learning Administrative support – student tracking, assessment Load reassignment for initial setup administration Financial support for development Administrative support – centralized point of contact for interested groups (business, not-for-profits), investigate possible sources from faculty-initiated request Student-Faculty Research Research and grant writing as part of workload Financial support Student employment/support Student travel support Professional Work Experience Professional development on developing internship opportunities Student support for special projects (Marketing example) Coordination with partners Load reassignment Are students willing to pay extra for out-of-class experiences? Student Survey Results We asked students if they were willing to pay $0, 50, 100, 250, 500, or 1,000 beyond tuition for out-of-class experiences. The blue bars denote the percentage of students that said they were willing to pay more who were willing to pay $250 or more for these opportunities. • A total of 1,331 students responded to the out-of-class experience survey. Who were they? • 299 Freshmen • 262 Sophomores • 338 Juniors • 264 Seniors • 143 5th year and beyond • 25 No year given A summary of the results of both surveys can be found on the table
