  2. Research at the University of Guelph • University of Guelph is one of the top ranked research intensive comprehensive universities in Canada • 7 Colleges • 4 Regional Campuses + 10 Additional Research Stations • 55 Research Centres

Canada Research Chairs • U of G currently has 39 allocated CRCs • Re-allocation exercise conducted by CRC Secretariat to be completed across Canada in Fall 2012 (results available in Winter 2013) • Distribution by Tier, College, Strategic Research Plan (SRP) Theme to be appended to SRP 2012-17

  4. Strategic Research Plan (SRP) • Released April 2012 for 2012-2017 • Mission: Change lives and improve life. • Goals: • To be a national leader in transforming and mobilizing knowledge • To obtain funding for key initiatives • To build research infrastructure

  5. SPR-Goals Continued • To develop extensive collaborative and international networks • To conduct research that provides critical new knowledge • To increase recognition of the University’s high-quality scholarship and its benefits to all sectors of society

SRP-Seven Theme Areas • Agriculture, food and the bioeconomy • Health and well-being in humans and animals • Economic management, governance and public policy • Biodiversity, environment and ecology • Human behaviour, cultural evolution, creative communities • Technology and applied sciences • Foundations of science

Goal: Obtaining Funding for Initiatives • Funding Opportunities • INSIDER (watch for e-mails from OR) • RefWorks Pivot - training September 14th • OR web site: http://www.uoguelph.ca/research/guelph-conduct-research/Agencies-Opportunities-Deadlines • Catalyst Centre What other ways do you have of finding funding opportunities?

Office of Research Support for Obtaining Funding • Grants and Contracts • Communicate funding opportunities • Liaison with funding agencies • Contribute to the development of more competitive proposal submissions for grant and contract funding • Reviewing research contractual agreements to ensure alignment with University of Guelph policy, and protection of IP rights, and to assess risk • Bring to your attention key contractual requirements and deliverables to ensure you are in agreement with the terms and can meet them

Goal: Building Research Infrastructure • Canada Foundation for Innovation • Leaders Opportunity Fund (LOF) • Institutional Allocation • Apply within the first two years of your academic appointment • Maximum of $312,500 (40% CFI, 40% MEDI, 20% matching from other sources) • Next deadline: January 15, 2013 By what other means can researchers acquire research infrastructure/equipment?

Goal: Recognition of Scholarship • Dissemination of research • Team of writers working to promote the University of Guelph’s broad research areas, research capacity and expertise • Dissemination of research findings to research sponsors, general public, etc. Other U of G resources to assist with recognition/dissemination of research By what other means can researchers gain recognition for their research programs and scholarship?

Goal: Supporting Research Excellence • Working to ensure that research conforms to the highest ethical standards in the use of human subjects, animals and biohazardousmaterials • Research Ethics Board • Animal Care Committee • Biohazard/Radiation Safety Officers • Administrative review of grant applications prior to submission to support the submission of quality proposals

  13. Goals: Support for Transforming and Mobilizing Knowledge • Catalyst Centre • Industry Liaison services • Assess intellectual property • Protect intellectual property • Commercialization services
