  1. Finnish National Thesaurus YSA • Used by libraries, archives, museums, virtual libraries • On the web with good search interface • 14.000 terms, 3.000 UFs • Maintained by Helsinki University Library = National Library of Finland • National guidelines for monolingual thesaurus (ISO 2788-1986)

  2. Maintenance procedure • Users send term suggestions to the maintenance group • Maintenance group keeps a list of them • Compares suggestions to earlier relevant terms, consults experts, reference books, Internet, Finnish Language Office

  3. Maintenance procedure • New terms or changes decided by a meeting of 12-13 information specialists, 4-5 times a year • Changes: not easy since established and used extensively (20 yrs) • Maintenance database: new suggestions plus a record of suggestions which have not been included, for later reference

  4. Challenges • Two official languages - Swedish version called Allärs • Balance between different fields of study • Specificity - generality • Historical terms • New terminology • 10 translations for ’empowerment’
