  2. Although the number of English Language Learners (ELLS) enrolled in schools in Santa Rosa District is relatively small, that number changes frequently as new families move into the area. More than fifteen different languages are spoken by our English Language Learners including the following: Spanish, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Korean, German, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Polish, Punjabi, Pohnpee, Chuukese, Portuguese, Thai, Japanese, Hindi and French. Meeting the needs of these students is a special challenge, as well as a legal and moral responsibility. District ESOL Resource Specialists will assist you in meeting the needs of ELLS.

District Timelines for Completion of ESOL Training Requirements • Area of Assignment I (Primary Language Arts/English Teacher • ESOL Endorsement: 15 semester hours or 300 inservice • K-12 ESOL Coverage: Bachelor’s or Master’s in ESOL & Basic Subject Area • K-12 ESOL Coverage: passing score on ESOL Subject Area Exam; Basic Subject Area; and 120 inservice points in continuing ESOL education within a 3 year time period of the ESOL addition to the certificate • NOTE: ESOL Endorsement or ESOL K-12 must be added to the certificate • Requirements must be met within 6 years after the teacher is first hired into the district. • Area of Assignment I teachers must completed 60 inservice hours within the first 2 years of employment and 60 hours each subsequent year until the endorsement is completed and added to the certificate.

District Timelines for Completion of ESOL Training Requirements • Area of Assignment II • (Computer Literacy, Math, Science, Social Science, Reading, Guidance and Administrators) • 3 semester hours or 60 inservice points • NOTE: Teachers of Reading must earn 60 points of ESOL inservice within the timelines prescribed below. After that time period, if the Reading Teacher is assigned an ELL student, the teacher must earn 3 semester hours or 60 ESOL inservice points each subsequent year until the endorsement is earned. • Experienced Teacher: Within 1 year after the teacher is hired • Beginning Teacher: Within 2 years after the teacher is hired • Administrator/Guidance: Within 3 years of being hired as an Admin/Guidance • Course requirements: ESOL Methods of Teaching or any 60 hours of previously taken ESOL inservice or 3 semester hours of ESOL college coursework . • NOTE: ESOL SAE plus 120 inservice points is also an option.

District Timelines for Completion of ESOL Training Requirements Area of Assignment III (All other subject area teachers not included in Area of Assigment 1 or 11) Experienced Teacher: Within 1 year after the teacher is hired Beginning Teacher: Within 2 years after the teacher is hired Course requirements: 18 hours of ESOL Inservice for Other Content Area Teachers, or any other ESOL inservice or college coursework. NOTE: ESOL SAE plus 120 inservice points is also an option.
