Overview of Virginia Tech • Comprehensive, Research I Institution • Land grant • 60 bachelor's degree programs • 140 master's and doctoral degree programs • ~28,000 total FTE • ~1,700 full-time teaching faculty
History of ePortfolios @ VT • 2002, Open Source Portfolio, version 1 • Student-Centered system • Faculty-development-led initiative • Early Adopters: Communications, Engineering Science and Mechanics, Business, scattered faculty and students • 2005, Open Source Portfolio, version 2 • Merged with Sakai Collaboration and Learning Environment • Included new assessment and reporting tools • Emerging new focus, combining student learning with larger academic assessments – English, Human Development • 2008, VT ePortfolio Initiatives office opened • Includes 2 full-time faculty and 1 graduate student • Focused on extending adoption to mid- and late-adopters • Working closely with campus groups – Office of Assessment, FDI, GEDI, First-year experience – to further mission of a “culture of assessment” at VT • Central part of the SACS re-accreditation Quality Enhancement Plan of 2010.
VT ePortfolio Initiatives’ Foci • Assessment • All degree-granting programs need to declare learning outcomes and ePortfolio offered as a clear way to assess direct evidence of student learning. • Learning • Programs engaged in increasing reflection and synthesis across their curriculum. • Professional Development • Using ePortfolio as a way to self-assess professional development goals, to monitor progress towards degrees, and to prepare students to enter the job market. • An example of a student’s portfolio that hits all three: • http://www.tinyurl.com/cbeach-englishedeport
