John Locke English Philosopher Idea: People consent to be governed (ruled) in return for their protection and natural rights • Natural rights: people had the right to life, liberty and property Impact: New governments were formed that got their power from the people who created the government. Protected individual life, liberty and the right to property -think the U.S.A.

  10. Voltaire French Philosopher • Ideas: People had the right to freedom of speech and people’s right to liberty • Liberty: to have the freedom to do what you want without having to ask for permission • Impact: People began to question the government and its practices • French revolution

  11. Montesquieu French Philosopher • Idea: Separate the government into different sections, or branches, in order to keep one branch from becoming too powerful • Impact: This would become a part of the United States Constitution • Legislative • Judicial • Executive

  12. Rousseau French Philosopher • Idea: Wanted democracy and peoples right to choose their government • Voting on leaders • No nobility • Impact: people began to question the power of the absolute ruler…or even to revolt • French revolution • Declaration of Independence
