  1. Ratios Chapter 4.1 B

  2. What is a Ratio? A comparison of two numbers using DIVISION! 2 sharks out of 5 fish Can be written 4 different ways: 2 5 2 : 5 2 to 5 2 out of 5 Just make sure it is in SIMPLEST form!!!

  3. Lets try some… 3 sailboats to 6 motor boats 3 6 1 2 ÷ 3 = 1 to 2 1 out of 2 1 : 2

  4. Here’s another… 6 blue jays to 18 cardinals 6 18 1 3 ÷ 6 = 1 to 3 1 out of 3 1 : 3

  5. What about THIS one??? There are 10 boys and 12 girls, find the ratio of boys to the total amount of kids. 10 22 5 11 ÷ 2 = 5 to 11 5 out of 11 5 : 11

  6. Make sure to read word problems!!! In the St. Lucie West band there are 15 trumpets and 9 trombones. Find the ratio of trombones to trumpets. The story says trombones FIRST!!! 9 15 3 5 ÷ 3 = 3 to 5 3 out of 5 3 : 5

  7. You can use ratios to find total amounts too… There are 21 students in class. If the ratio of Boys to Girls is 3:4, what is the actual number of Boys & Girls? 2nd Now that you know 7 goes into 21 3 times MULTIPLY both numbers by 3! 1st Since the ratio is 3 to 4 that equals 7 students, notice anything about 7 and 21? 3rd 3 x 3 = 9 and 4 x 3 = 12 so there are 9 boys & 12 girls …this should ADD up to 21!!!

  8. Try this one by yourself There are 55 animals at the shelter. If the ratio of dogs to cats is 2 to 3, how many dogs & cats are there? 2nd Now that you know 5 goes into 55 11 times, MULTIPLY both numbers by 11! 1st Since the ratio is 2 to 3 that equals 5 animals, notice anything about 5 and 55? 3rd2 x 11 = 22 and 3 x 11 = 33 so there are 22 dogs & 33 cats …this should ADD up to 55!!!
