Human Rights • The modern conception of human rights developed in the aftermath of WWII, in part as a response to the Holocaust, culminating in the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. • Inalienable rights are rights which are not contingent upon the laws, customs, or beliefs of a particular society or polity. • Inalienable rights, include the right to practice religion, freedom of speech, due process, and equal protection of the laws.

Amnesty International • The work of Amnesty International is a global movement. • They give priority to specific human rights issues. • Amnesty International is an independent and democratically-run organization. • Work in Canada includes appealing to the Canadian government on specific issues pertaining to human rights.

  3. What is a slum? • Densely populated area of substandard housing, usually in a city, characterized by unsanitary conditions and social disorganization.
