Introduction • My name is Ashley Evans and I am 28 years old. • I work for Ernst & Young LLP (EY) • EY is a financial services firm that provides accounting, tax, consulting, and transaction services • My office is located right on Figueroa St. & 7th St. where they just opened the new Target downtown • My role at EY is Marketing Leader for Greater Los Angeles and Las Vegas (which totals about 1,500 people) • I have been with EY for over 7 years
The good old days I was born and raised in Northern California and because my Dad didn’t have a son, I played almost every sport…. Swimming Skiing Soccer Track team Volleyball Golf
Family Some of the most important people in my life are my parents and my younger sister Hailey. I am extremely proud of being an older sister and I consider her to be my best friend.
Fiancée David I recently got engaged to my boyfriend of 4 years, David. Having a significant other who you can really count on and who makes you a better person every day has been very important to me.
Role model My grandfather has been one of my strongest role models. He always told me to dream big and work hard and I would be able to do anything. I think having great mentors and role models is one of the keys to success. Who are your role models?
High school I attended Notre Dame High School my Freshman year and transferred to Sacred Heart Preparatory. It was an exciting and nerve racking Sophomore year. \
High school • I was very busy during high school. I played on the varsity girl’s golf team, worked on the yearbook committee, took advanced classes and babysat on the weekends to make money. • I had a good group of close friends in high school, but I definitely wasn’t popular. I remember the “popular” kids would all hang out in this one area during lunch and it scared me to death to even go in there. • I was a pretty shy kid and just wasn’t comfortable in my own skin yet
High school Activities/Athletics Jobs Girl’s golf team Yearbook Honors and AP classes Volunteering After all of my activities, I was up until 11 or so every night finishing my homework. I was never allowed to have a TV in my room and I didn’t get a cell phone until my Junior year (crazy!) Freshman year I started babysitting for kids in my neighborhood. I scheduled everything head of time so I had babysitting jobs booked almost every weekend. During the summer I was a nanny or worked in retail. My parents made me buy most of my own clothes and any extra fun things I wanted so I needed to earn my own money.
High school Fondest memories Obstacles/adversity I had to overcome Hanging out with my friends Getting good grades Playing sports, participating in school activities, volunteering Having a job and making $$$ Transferring schools Not getting enough sleep Not having much free time on the weekends to hang out with friends. Cliques / Not being in the “popular” crowd at school
College My parents always emphasized the importance of education. I studied hard in high school because I knew I needed a college education to get the career I wanted. I attended The University of Southern California (USC) and was part of the Marshall School of Business. FIGHT ON! \
College Activities/Athletics Jobs Studying Sorority Working Going to football games Paid internships and jobs were hard to come by. I worked at Audubon Middle School on Martin Luther King, Blvd. as an after school tutor three days a week. Junior year I got an internship at EY working 20 hours a week while I was in school. During the summer of Junior year, I needed to work full time (40 hours/week) so I got a second job in marketing at the Citadel Outlets.
College Favorite classes Least favorite classes Marketing Business strategy Literature Economics Statistics Some of the general education classes that USC offered were really fun and different. I was able to take an architecture class and a geology class. For the geology class you could choose between writing a paper or going on a camping trip for one of the projects. I went on the camping trip and it was so much fun!
College Fondest memories Obstacles or adversity that I had to overcome Broadening my horizons by meeting new people, exploring new places, etc. Very strong friend group Living on my own away from home I was able to get a ½ scholarship for school, but I had to take out student loans for the rest. I am still paying them off Working while my other friends didn’t have to (I had to wake up at 6am living in a room with 6 people!)
Career My first Job My worst Job Doing odd jobs for my Dad to help him fill orders, like putting labels on frisbees. Working at J Crew during winter break from college. The holidays are such a crazy time at the mall, everyone would leave the store a mess and we would have to clean it all up. Having an internship while in college is very important. I worked at both a small and a large company during college and I discovered that I enjoyed the large company atmosphere and culture a lot better
Culture at EY EY prides itself on being a very inclusive culture Affinity groups (LGBT, ethnic, gender, and other related groups) We work with diverse suppliers which include minority- and woman-owned businesses Awards for our diversity and inclusiveness programs EY has a focus on giving back to the community EY Connect Day where we close our offices and close to 1,000 people volunteer in Los Angeles Very intelligent, motivated, hard-working group of people. It’s inspiring to work with people like that
Current Role • I am in charge of EY’s brand/image in Greater Los Angeles • I work with the leadership in my office to develop a strategy on how we want to be seen in the market and how we want to win new business. • I help disseminate marketing materials and plan different events to showcase the knowledge and ideas of our professionals • I manage the Entrepreneur Of The Year awards program • Video
Life at EY A job isn’t all about work, many companies have great working environments. Through EY I have been able to meet Jessica Alba and Magic Johnson at the EOY Awards, go into the dugout at Dodger’s Stadium, participate in a mud run and go white water rafting with my team.
Work-life balance? I am proud to work for EY. To me, it doesn’t feel like a “job” because I’m passionate about what I do and I really enjoy being around the people I work with. People mention “work-life balance” all the time. I think in 2014, that doesn’t really exist anymore, but in a good way. There is more flexibility than ever before and you can have remote teaming with people all over the world. My typical work day starts at 7:30am in the office and I don’t normally leave until 6 or 7pm at night. I can work remotely (from home) when I need to or adjust my hours when I need to. The more you prove yourself at EY, the more leeway you’re given to manage your own schedule.
Career challenges One thing I’ve learned from my career is it’s important to have patience. When I started I thought I could move up the ranks fast and make a lot of money fast. But I realized quickly that I had a lot to learn and it wasn’t easy getting promoted. Another thing I learned while at EY is the importance of mentors. No matter what career path you take, seek out a trusted advisor/mentor to help guide you along the way. I also learned the importance of a personal brand. Sometimes you don’t think about the image you portray to your coworkers, your boss, or the larger business community. It’s very important to think about what you want that image to be and what you want to be known for.
