Qu’est-ce que c’est, l’imparfait?

L’imparfait and le passé composé are both past tenses. Unlike the passé composé, the past imperfect tense (l’imparfait) is used to describe an incident in the past which occurred over a duration of time, or a state of being, which can not be confined to a definite time.

How to conjugate verbs in l’imparfait

·        1--Take the 1st personne plural form of the verb (nous).

ex: Nous avons, nous aimons, nous finissons

·        2--Remove the ons ending.

ex: avons= av

aimons= aim

finissons=finiss

·        3--Add the following endings:

Now, complete the following sentences by conjugating the appropriate verb in l’imparfait. Pay special attention to the meaning of the sentence and why, for some situations, the imparfait is more appropriate than the passé composé.

1. Tu (faire) _________les vaiselles lorsque je suis entrée dans la maison. (You were doing the dishes….)

2. Je(être)_________très triste hier. I was very sad yesterday.

3. Il y (avoir) _________une tempête de neige.* (There was a snow storm…)

4.Nous (parler) _________quand tu as téléphoné. (We were talking…)

5. Vous (aller) _________au cinéma.* (You were going to the movies.)
