  1. Presenting 4J’s Ideas for KDC  Design Brief: How can we reduce the amount of drinking water used at our school?

  2. Water walk-how water is used in our school • On our water walk around our school we observed where water is used in our school.

  3. water saving devices Our school had a water audit in 2009. This was part of introducing a water tank and watering system for our grassed play area.

  4. We discovered by looking at the audit, that it would save 30% of our drinking water! • This motivated us to look at saving even more water around our school.

  5. Back in the classroom we investigated how much water is wasted when a tap is left to drip. • We have 21 taps in class wet areas alone. • If just one tap is left to drip in each area that would be 3669L of water wasted in a year! • Or 100 049 litres a year if every tap was left to drip each day! • We read our school water meter to see how much water our school uses.

  6. Brainstorming In groups we began to brainstorm ideas on how we were going to get people’s attention to save water. We decided to use different techniques to save water at school.

  7. Groups getting ideas • Each group focussed on a different area. We looked at our bubblers, the toilet taps, the staff room, outside garden areas and the wet area taps and sinks.

  8. Presenting Solutions Groups planned what they were going to do to present their ideas. Bubblers- Commercial and posters Toilet Taps- Water Song and Posters Staffroom- Commercial Outside garden areas- Posters Wet area sinks and taps- Commercial and posters We plan to display our posters and present skits and advertisements at school assemblies and to classes.

  9. Group designed sketches, posters, mascots, commercials, interviews and surveys. posters commercials Assembly Items posters Mulching and click off hoses

  10. Saving water at Tharawal: BUBBLERS Fix leaking bubblers Do not vandalise the bubblers Only drink what you need Adjust the way the water is dispensed Turn bubblers off properly Bring water from home Use sensor timed taps STAFFROOM Turn off the tap when not in use Fill the dishwasher before using TOILET SINKS Turn off the taps Fix any leaking taps Place posters at sinks Use as little water as you can Have less taps SINKS and TAPS Use containers Turn off the taps Get the interest of the students so they will want to save water Place posters above the sinks OUTSIDE GARDENS Mulch the gardens Use trigger hoses Attach hoses to the tank
