  1. The Synchrony IOL is not currently FDA-approved OPTICAL QUALITY OF DUAL-OPTIC ACCOMMODATING INTRAOCULAR LENS 1 Fundacion Valle del Lili, Cali-Colombia 2 Universidad Industrial de Santander, Bucaramanga-Colombia 3 Universidad Autonoma de Bucaramanga, Bucaramanga-Colombia 4 Abbott Medical Optics Inc, Irvine, USA Financial Disclosure a Consultant Abbott Medical Optics b Scientist at Abbott Medical Optics Inc. • Andrea Galvis, MD 1,3 a • Ivan Ossma, MD MPH MSc 1,2, a • Sanjeev Kasthurirangan, PhD 4, b

  2. 2 Synchrony Design • Anterior Optic 32 Diopters • Posterior Optic Divergent (negative)

  3. Study Purpose • Compare Optical Quality Pseudophakic Eyes • Monofocal IOL • Synchrony Dual Optic Accommodating IOL • Parameters • Objective iTrace aberrometry • Custom Matlab Software to calculate MTF • Subjective Contrast Sensitivity Testing • Optec 6500

  4. Study Population • iTrace aberrometry • Cycloplegia • 3 mm zone • Matlab Software to calculate MTF • Monofocal IOL : 15 subjects (30 eyes) • Synchrony IOL : 16 subjects (32 eyes)

  5. iTrace - Matlab conversion

  6. Results

  7. Difference 0.01 um Objective Measurements3 mm pupil

  8. Best-focus MTF 3 mm pupil Differences are less than 10%

  9. 9 Mesopic Contrast Sensitivity p=0.61 Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test

  10. Discussion • Dual Optic Design DOES NOT affect optical or retinal image quality of the eye • Objective evidence (iTrace, MTF) • Subjective evidence (CSF) • Contrast sensitivity of Synchrony is equivalent to that of monofocal IOLs

  11. Discussion • Effect of the slight spherical aberration on Synchrony would only yield 0.42 D of increased depth of focus • Calculations based on Rocha’s work * • The improved near vision of Synchrony patients MOST LIKELY due to true accommodation * Rocha KM. Using Adaptive Optics Simultion to Explore the Effect of Higher Order Aberrations on Depth of Focus for the Correction of Presbyopia. Wavefront Congress 2008

  12. Conclusion • Quality of Vision of Synchrony IOL similar to standard monofocal IOLs • Measured Subjectively • Measured Objectively • Improved Near Vision with Synchrony • Not related to increased depth of focus
