  4. PRESENTATION OUTLINE • Consolidation Requests by Area • The Meyrin Accelerator Complex • AD • LEIR • Linac2 / Linac3 • PSB • PS • SPS • LHC • Summary tables • Risk Analysis 3 MCHF consolidation budget started or approved, rest of consolidation transferred to LIU 1.7 MCHF consolidation budget already approved. 3.6 MCHF consolidation budget already approved.

  5. AD Consolidation - HLRF AD RF system was built to start physics in 2000 by recuperating old RF equipment coming from dismissed accelerators and with the initial perspective of operating until 2012, then extended to 2016 and later. RF amplifiers for the bunch rotation system AD C10 were built around the TH116 RF tube, now out of production, the existing stock may provide still 5 years of operation, depending on the status of spares. With one system the AD can run at 70% of the beam current. • AD C10 • AD C02 • The renovation of power supplies will improve reliability and maintainability. Consolidation is needed for LLRF and interlocks. • The urgency of the renovation will depend also on the measurements that will be performed on the “stock” of TH116. AD

  6. AD Consolidation - LLRF The AD LLRF system is of the old analogue type, an upgrade to the new digital standards, already tested on other machines, like PSB, is necessary. The upgrade of the Schottky pick-up electronics can be done at the same time. The upgrade of the transverse dampers can progress in parallel with the renovation of the PSB equipment. AD

  7. AD Stochastic Cooling The AD stochastic cooling plays a fundamental role in the machine operation. 48 RF amplifiers need to be replaced after 30 years of operation; components are obsolete and the amplifiers and RF filters will not withstand additional 20 years of operation. AD

  8. Linac2/Linac3 Consolidation - HLRF The 200 MHz amplifier for the Linac2 RFQ is heavily corroded, no adjustment is possible in this condition. A spare amplifier would be profitable also to the Linac3 IH RF system. • Linac3 Consolidation • The renovation concerns: • the LLRF, that will be upgraded to the Linac4 standard; • The driver amplifiers for bunchers, debuncher and ramping cavity; • The Frank James amplifiers. Linac2/Linac3

  9. SPS Consolidation - New 18 kVAC transformers Manufactured in 1989, they have an expected lifetime of 20-30 years; an accident happened in 2011. Experts’ review (EDMS 1222075) recommends replacement in medium term. • New HV capacitors • Following an accident in 1997 all capacitors were replaced in 1998. The expected lifetime is 20 years. • HV new cabling (TWC + Dampers) • Upgraded in 90’s, several HV cable faults observed within the last years. • Reliability and safety issues require new cables complying with safety standards. SPS

  10. SPS Consolidation – Cooling Pipes • 40 years old cooling pipes for SPS RF amplifiers are source of risk for the reliability of RF systems and safety of personnel. Upgrade needed to stainless steel pipes. • YL tube replacement • Richardson decided to stop producing tubes (YL1530, YL1520, YL1440) • Half SPS-RF 200 MHz is affected • Sector management agreed to move to Thales to provide a ‘pin to pin’ compatible tube • Damper Power Amplifiers Consolidation • New tube design by suppliers (new grid material); • Present air cooling is too weak leading in premature tube failures; • Machine down time and cost impact as tube lifetime is reduced; • New amplifiers cooling system. • Cooling • Several faults have been identified due to amplifier to kicker connection • Improved connection to be studied and implemented • Amplifier to kicker connection SPS

  11. LHC Consolidation – Additional Spare Cavities • We will now build 6 cavities with He-tank instead of 3, and we will have to work on the spare unit LHC19 (contaminated) and the module HCACSCA000-AC000003 that will be removed from the machine. . • A new LHC module has been agreed • Four new spare couplers are needed for this module, including four Double walled Tubes (DT) • LHC 4 FPC for new module • LHC Damper Power Amplifiers • Same as for the SPS LHC

  12. BUDGET Summary Table Summary Tables

  13. RISK ANALYSIS Summary Table • In the risk analysis Rs’ still includes CNGS, in order to keep coherence with previous analysis. • AD Rs’ is obviously low, being AD a “single user” machine, counting for a factor 0.1; however the proposed consolidation is crucial for extending the operation to the next decades. Summary Tables
