  4. Outbound organizations An outbound organization is one that provides travel and tourism products and services for tourists holidaying outside the country where they normally live. These include: • tour operators • travel agents • transport providers. What do you think are the main roles of these different types of outbound organization?

  5. Outbound tour operators To which sector do tour operators belong?

  6. The Big Four and the Big Two

  7. Outbound travel agents Travel agents provide the link between the tour operator and the customer. For this reason, they are often referred to as the middlemen of the industry. Travel agents need to know the many different products and services that are on offer, in order to be able to recommend the right products and services to the customer. Travel agents earn commission for the products and services they manage to sell. To which sector do travel agents belong?

  10. Outbound airlines There are two different types of airline service. Do you know what these are? Scheduled (e.g. Virgin Atlantic, British Airways) These operate to a published timetable. Flights must depart on schedule regardless of how many seats are booked. Charter (e.g. Thomson Airways, Monarch Airways) These are usually contracted for a specific holiday season. The airlines rent out their aircraft to package holiday companies, who fill up the seats with their customers. Increasingly, airlines are offering both scheduled and charter services.

  12. Outbound rail services Case study:the Channel Tunnel The Channel Tunnel is an undersea rail tunnel linking England with northern France. Its Eurotunnel and Eurostar services have meant tourists can get to Europe faster than ever. Direct destinations include Lille, Calais, Disneyland Paris and Brussels. High speed connections to many other destinations around Europe are also offered. How are the services offered by Eurostar and Eurotunnel different from each other?
