  5. 1. What is a Computer? • A computer is a machine that handle a vast amount of information at high speed, and performs four basic tasks: • Receiving, Storing, Processing, and Outputting Example: A data analysis in the Statistical Product for Social Sciences (SPSS) Software

Summary • In education, the student uses the computer to perform three functions: logic comparisons, arithmetic operations, storage, and retrieval. • The computer accomplishes these functions at high speed, storing huge amounts of data in a binary format. • The central processing unit (CPU), controls what is happening. • Arithmetic logic unit (ALU) performs arithmetic operations. • Primary memory, ROM and RAM, store all data and instructions necessary for operations. • The operating system, is the control program that handles the transfer of data, and makes possible to enters and runs programs. • This Chapter has explored the functions of the major input, output, and input/output devices; and the criteria for hardware selection.
